Job Description

The Biotherapeutics Process Development (BPD) group is looking for a motivated intern to assist in the development of upstream cell culture processes. The BPD group at Takeda is responsible for design, development, scale up, and transfer of manufacturing processes for early and late-stage biologic therapies. The summer intern will play a key role in platform development initiatives to advance upstream cell culture processes by utilizing a Graphical User Interface (GUI) as a modeling tool. Their primary focus will be a proof-of-concept case study aimed at optimizing amino acid content in media formulations. Responsibilities will include designing and executing experiments, performing in-depth data analysis, and presenting findings to the Bioprocess Development (BPD) team to support innovation and enhance process efficiency.

The intern will contribute to this work through hands-on execution of experiments using shake flasks, AMBR15, AMBR250, and/or benchtop bioreactor systems, under the guidance of upstream subject matter experts (SMEs). They will actively participate in experimental design, data interpretation, and effective communication of results to the broader BPD team, fostering collaboration and contributing to impactful advancements in upstream bioprocessing.

Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to collaborate with team members from upstream, downstream, technical development, and analytical teams throughout the project. This opportunity will provide the student with relevant experience in cell culture-based production of protein therapeutics and facilitate development of key skills needed to thrive as an engineer or scientist in the pharmaceutical industry.

Job Description:

The intern will participate in:

Ongoing process development efforts to better improve the in-process control and process understandingPlan and execute cell culture experiments in shake flasks, high throughput AMBR systems, and/or bench top bioreactorsKeep complete records of experimental design, results, and conclusions with an electronic notebookShare key results & findings through oral presentations and written reportsComplete other lab activities as neededCollaborate with other cross-functionals teams from within BPD and Analytical Development (AD)

Job Requirements:

This position will be Fully Onsite and require 4+ days in the Lexington, MA office per week.The ideal candidate is a junior year undergraduate, or graduate student pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biochemistry, or in a similar field.Previous experience in a laboratory setting is required.Previous experience with upstream cell culture processes and high-throughput AMBR systems in a laboratory setting is preferred.Knowledge of data sciences, modeling and machine learning is preferred.Understanding of computer skills including MS Office (PowerPoint, Words, Excel) and Python (programming language) is preferred.Internet skills including use of e-mails, group messaging and information gatheringHighly reliable and a strong team playerFlexible with an attention to detailStrong verbal and written communication skills

Internship Eligibility

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorshipMust be currently enrolled in a degree program graduating December 2025 or laterThe internship program is 10-12 weeks depending on the two start dates (June 2nd- August 29th) or (June 16th - August 22nd)The intern must be able to commit to one of these time framesAble to work full time 40 hours a week during internship datesTakeda does not provide a housing stipend or relocation support for the U.S Summer Internship Program

U.S. Hourly Wage Range:

$21.00 - $46.00

The estimated hourly range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on the candidate’s school year/level to be entered following completion of internship.  The actual hourly wage offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
