General Summary:
Henry Ford Health is recruiting for a Director of Ethics. The Director of Ethics for Henry Ford Health provides leadership and is responsible for all aspects of the clinical ethics program. The Director will serve as a thought leader and subject matter expert for ethics across the system. This role combines leadership skills with clinical and organizational ethics expertise. Acting as a champion for enhancing ethics consultation, ethics education, ethics policy, and ethics research the director will promote consistently high standards. The Director’s responsibilities will be allocated as follows; 30% clinical ethics consultation and 70% other activities, including education, policy development, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and scholarship. The Director will oversee and maintain robust system-wide ethics program that responds nimbly to clinical and organizational ethics needs within Henry Ford Health. This position acts as a liaison and consultant to other departments, physicians, and external agencies. This position will partner with Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and leaders to assure continuous quality improvement in all aspects of the ethics program. As a key member of the quality team, this leader will contribute to Henry Ford Health’s high reliability journey. The goal will be to integrate ethics strategically throughout the organization, through collaborative communication, education, and policy development. Position may require daily travel to various system sites.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
· Reporting to the Chief Quality Officer, oversees strategic and operational objectives for ethics clinical consultation, staff education, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, scholarship, and ethics policy development consistent with Henry Ford Health and assigned market direction. Serves as a role model for interdisciplinary, collaborative care improvement and delivery. This work is done in collaboration with key stakeholders and leaders.
· Functions in a clinical role performing and overseeing ethics consultations for Henry Ford Health hospitals, with approximately 30% of the role dedicated to clinical consultation. In addition to forming and leading a system clinical ethics committee, responsible for overseeing and managing a robust system-wide model for ethics consultation supporting timely and high-quality Care.
· Chairs the system-wide Clinical Ethics Committee and provides oversight and coordination for ethics committees throughout the system. Collaborates with hospital and regional leadership regarding clinical ethics staff recruitment, retention, engagement.
· Creates a system of continuous improvement of the ethics consultation service and institute improvements as needed. Oversees the development of new system policies as well as the integration and standardization of existing polices. Partners with Henry Ford Health administrative and clinical leadership to fulfill their quality, safety and patient experience accountabilities as related to ethics activities.
· Leads the development and implementation of system-wide policies and processes related to clinical ethics, organizational ethics, and patient rights, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards. Provides liaison ethics support to Henry Ford Health Institutional Review Boards.
· Maintains expert knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Henry Ford Health Compliance Program, Standards of Conduct, current issues in medical ethics, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior. Collaborates with quality and legal teams.
· Engages in scholarship related to clinical ethics, contributing to academic research and professional publications. Supports partnerships with Michigan State University and fosters opportunities for academic collaboration.
· Provides oversight and direction to clinical ethics staff.
Education and Experience Required:
· Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with area of specialization in bioethics, or Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD), or a Doctor of Medicine with additional advanced graduate level program, fellowship in Bioethics/Clinical Ethics or equivalent.
· Two (2) or more years of advanced clinical ethics practice.
· Two (2) or more years of demonstrated experience with clinical ethics program development, clinical ethics consultation, organizational ethics, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
· Experience developing and leading an ethics service across multiple hospitals and care teams preferred.
· Understanding of and experience with ethics needs assessment, models of ethics process, and ethics resource management required.
· Must have exceptional communication and collaborating skills, leadership, strategic thinking, and organizational skills. Must be able to define and implement a vision, be a persuasive communicator with strong interpersonal skills who is empathetic and a respectful listener and who can create an atmosphere that allows individuals to flourish.
· Must be able to effectively operate in the complex environment of an academic health center.
· Must have a high level of integrity and the ability to foster trust.
· Willingness to promote Henry Ford Health as a leader of clinical, educational, research and education ethics.
· Knowledge of health care ethics standards, health care law, applicable regulations, accreditation requirements and clinical standards of practice.
· Ability to collaborate with clinicians and organizational leadership to facilitate implementation and integration of ethics service within the institution.
· Ability to plan, set and accomplish multiple objectives.
· Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, directing and managing multiple and complex projects.
· Attention to detail, exhibit self-direction, high degree of independence, good judgment and discretion, teaching ability, effective oral and written communication skills, demonstrate ability to work effectively with others as a team member and the leadership skills to implement and execute a region-wide ethics program.
· Ability to work with highly confidential and sensitive information.

· Analytical and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with diverse groups including executive leaders, patients, family members, physicians, colleagues, nursing, managers, medical staff and be able to teach and develop others.

· Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
· Savvy consensus-skills with proven experience building relationships.
· Understanding of mission driven, patient-centered care.
· Leadership sophistication with ability to manage by influence.
Certifications/Licensures
Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certification (HEC-C) from American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) preferred.
