The Vessel
REV Ocean is unlike any other ship. It is equipped with some of the most sophisticated facilities onboard for carrying out cutting-edge ocean science, as well as offering charter opportunities designed to integrate exploration, adventure, and science. REV Ocean will operate as a research vessel for 2/3 of the year and be available for charters for 1/3 of the year.

The 1st Officer is a watchkeeper and responsible for managing bridge operations during shifts. The role will include other duties as designated by the Captain or Chief Officer. In the absence of the onboard Safety and Security Officer, the 1st Officer will assume the role of Safety Officer and will cover all responsibilities and duties normally assigned to the Safety and Security Officer. Responsibilities and Duties

· Comply with and enforce the “Captain’s Standing Orders”

· Support the Captain in ensuring the ship’s compliance with company policies and procedures as well as international, state, or local maritime regulations

· Support the Captain in ensuring the ship’s compliance with International Safety management (ISM), classification society rules, and Maritime Insurance, within his/her area of responsibility.

· Support the Captain in achieving REV Objectives (safety, quality and environmental).

· Be aware of QHSE in all tasks and operations and report any issues, discrepancies, accidents, or incidents immediately to the bridge

· Be familiar with all emergency procedures and duties, assisting in emergency situations in accordance to the safety plan or as required. Partake in emergency drills when required

· Assist as required in conducting inductions, on board familiarizations, and training

· Assist the Chief Officer in maintaining order, discipline, cleanliness and preservation of the vessel

· Assist the Chief Officer as required with management of deck personnel

· Assist the Chief Officer with distribution of tasks and routine maintenance jobs to the deck team

· Ensure all deck and mooring equipment are always maintained in proper working condition.

· Assist the Chief Officer with management of stocks, equipment, purchasing, preparation for voyages, maintenance and deck operations

· Manage the permit to work (PTW) system when on duty

· Assist the Captain during port authority visits and during audits and inspections.

· Assist with the Risk Assessment (RA) system as required

· Monitor loading and offloading operations, stowage, and care of all cargo and science equipment as required

· Control the plans, manuals and certificates of the equipment under your responsibility

· Provide handover notes for the relieving 1st Officer, prior to departing the ship

· Assist the Captain and Chief Officer in additional duties and responsibilities as required

· Route planning

· Watchkeeping on the bridge

· Control, management and updating of charts and publications, as required

· Assist with keeping the radio log and completing the required tests according to regulations.

· Ensure all bridge logbooks and required documents are filled in correctly and kept up to date

· Cover all deck officer tasks as required during watch periods, including (but not limited to) Permit to Work (PTW) system, managing and coordination of deck operations etc

· Check the draft before departure and update stability calculator

· Monitor weather forecasts, navigation warnings and distress messages daily


Competency Requirements

The 1st Officer must have competency as required within REV Ocean Operational Departments’ Competence Matrix.

 
Line of Reporting

Report to the Chief Officer.
