2025 Summer Intern-Translational Safety
The Position

Department Summary

Development Sciences (DevSci) is a translational science organization that spans the entire drug discovery and development cycle — from early stage research to drug commercialization. Part of the drug development pipeline in DevSci includes the preclinical safety evaluation of therapeutic candidates by scientists, toxicologists and pathologists in the Translational Safety (TS) department in order to enable further evaluation in humans.

The complex in vitro systems lab (CIS) within TS develops and characterizes models that have the potential to reduce or replace the use of animals in the assessment of efficacy, biodistribution and toxicity. CIS works closely with scientists across DevSci and Genentech/ Roche broadly to develop, democratize, and prioritize complex in vitro models and to interpret data generated with them towards this goal. Using a variety of genetic, functional, and morphological assessments in collaboration with pathologists, image analysis scientists, and computational scientists, CIS aims to provide high quality toxicology data that helps to derisk and/or understand the clinical relevance of potential adverse drug reactions.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site

The Opportunity

A position is available to assist our team in the characterization of models of the lung and/or brain using a combination of histology, ultrastructure, immunoreactivity, and digital pathology algorithms. You will work closely with pathologists, image analysis scientists, and lab-based scientists to compare the features of simple and complex in vitro models to the “ground truth” of in vivo (human or animal) tissue samples. You will use commercially available image analysis platforms to generate ground truth and assist in developing methods to provide quantitative data that will be correlated with orthogonal assessments of model structure, function, and xenobiotic sensitivity.

Program Highlights

Intensive 12-weeks (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
