Off Shift Fire Protection Technician
Essential function(s) includes, but is not limited to:
Under the Supervision of Emergency Services Supervisor, conducts investigations into odor complaints, chemical spills (ex: HAZMAT), high risk rescue, fire/smoke conditions, and directs the operational activities of the plant fire department. Performs routine fire inspections, fire systems shutdowns, and fire alarm panel resets, firefighting, and fire protection equipment tests, and provides instruction of firefighting and fire protection personnel. Operates and maintains programs and systems associated with plant fire protection. Assures the quality of our Company's products and services are in compliance with operating procedures, company and government regulation, and good manufacturing practices are of the highest priority. Completes documentation of work to verify compliance.
Primary Activities
The primary activities include and are not limited to the following:
Inspects buildings in the plant as follows: checks for presence of proper fire protection equipment in the area where personnel are working quarterly and/or monthly fire valve inspection; water flow testing; main draw flow test, yearly hydrant flushing/testing; hose rack inspections; scheduled fire pump and fire extinguisher inspections, mounts fire extinguishers in desire locations.
Performs initial assessment and investigations for smoke, odor, chemical, biological, and all spills, or any abnormal situation. Investigates and reports the status of all dispatches received from the Command Center according to established procedures. Can provide direct mitigation pending the toxicity level of the spill, especially on the off shits. Provides assistance during chemical clean up. Reports all safety violations found during the investigation.
Completes all shutdowns of sprinkler risers to permit work by our Company's employees and/or outside contractors. Shuts down fire pumps, secures valves, drains and refills system. Restores all fire protection systems to normal operation.
Directs the overall activities of the plant Fire Brigade in performance of their duties under the direction of the Emergency Services Supervisor.
Inspects, tests, or replaces all fire hose on site and records or reports test results as required. Removes any faulty or defective hose as required.
Supports training exercises for the Fire Brigade and to our Company's employees on the use of various types of fire extinguishers for designated employees. Provides specialized training as listed in the master training schedule or as instructed.
Assures fire trucks and powered equipment are tested in accordance with departmental guidelines and fire fighter gear is always in proper operating condition. Maintains good housekeeping in all areas associated with his/her responsibilities.
Assists supervision in routine tours with insurance underwriters, inspectors, & engineers. Accompanies manufacture representative or designated vendor to conduct annual pump, hydrant flow testing, and includes all site-specific fire protection systems.
Operates, repairs, and refills Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) equipment.
Performs additional site emergency support activities as needed, such as equipment displays, ventilation, wash downs, testing using fire water, and site medical emergency support. Perform all High-Risk Work rescue as required.
Work with outside agencies responding to the site during emergencies.
Able to work under cGMP guidelines unless directed differently due to emergency.
Position Qualifications:
Education Minimum Requirement:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Current Certification in FFI, FFII, NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, HAZMAT 1910.120 Technician Level, OSHA CFR.
Familiarity with industrial level utility systems (air steam, high voltage, etc.)
Required Experience and Skills:
Fire protection experience, as a Chief Officer (Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, or Battalion Chief).
A minimum of 5 years of current active Fire Department Volunteer or paid experience in municipal fire department in a Chief position.
Initial and annual medical surveillance is required.
Current valid Driver’s License is required.
Candidate must qualify medically under existing fire fighter and HAZMAT technician protocol for the job.
Additional mandatory training must be attended successfully to maintain this position.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
EVOC, NIMS 300 & 400, Pump 1 & 2 Operations, Property Conservation, Confined Space, High Angle Rescue, and Trench Rescue certified.
Equipment or Machinery Operated:
All Fire Fighting and protection equipment such as extinguishers, hoses, nozzles, breathing apparatus, fire trucks, pumps, hand tools, power equipment, TIC, firefighter turn out gear, PPE, Chemical protective equipment, metering used for emergency response, monitoring, or leak detection.
Special Skills or Abilities:
Capable of utilizing various training techniques in fire protection work.
Must have respiratory protection qualification.
Able to work with Specialty Fire Alarm Systems such as CO2, Foam, Halon, FM 200 pre-action, deluge VESDA, or Thermo-Wire.
Able to read, understand, and utilize fire main blueprints to conduct controlled isolation of the fire main systems.
Ability to conduct investigations for odors, spills, alarms, in an industrial environment.
Special Job Features/Conditions:
Lift weight of 100lbs or greater occasionally.
Climbing ladders to heights of 100 feet.
Initial and annual medical surveillance is required.
Current valid Driver’s License is required.
Candidate must qualify medically under existing fire fighter and HAZMAT technician protocol for the job.
Additional mandatory training must be attended successfully to maintain this position.
Works with fire extinguishers, handling chemicals and/or gasses under pressure, etc.
Must be clear for all immunizations and titer requirements.
