Job DescriptionManages the day to day operation of the microbiology department to insure smooth flow of samples and testingProvides laboratory operations leadershipHires, coaches, reviews, manages, and terminates assigned staffPrioritizes daily operational activitiesEnsures all quality control systems are operational and in force in all operations within scopeOversees the scheduling of microbiology staff to insure production schedules are metMaintains staffing to achieve workload goals by adjusting personnel to meet peak demandsEnsures Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) are in place, relevant, and continually evaluatedPrepares for and facilitates periodic customer or regulatory audits of all laboratories within scopeMaintains current knowledge of industry standards and regulatory environmentReviews and approves SOPsActively participates in strategic planningProvides method development leadership and oversightBuilds and maintains positive client relationshipsEnsures client satisfactionCounsels microbiology staff with regard to problems encountered in daily operationsOversees the checking and transfer of microbiology data as necessary and takes steps to correct possibly inaccurate data prior to continued processing or releaseOversees the orientation of new microbiology staff to their responsibilities and the function of the microbiology departmentConducts timely investigations in coordination with Quality Assurance related to site quality events, including, but not limited to customer complaints, inquiries, non-conformances, corrective actions, and audit findingsIdentifies process improvements to better meet client expectations and company objectivesRecommends new equipment for the microbiology departmentCompiles statisticsOversees the monitoring of inventory/ordering by establishing and maintaining par levels and re-stocking points for microbiology supplies and reagentsServes as a liaison for the department to outside vendorsAssists in capital budgeting and executionUnderstands costs of testing and how to calculate themInitiates advances in methodology and/or technology useInterface with and represent laboratory operations to local, state, and federal regulators as required from time to timePerforms duties in compliance with all applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies and cGMP expectations, including but not limited to:  Facility and equipment maintenance, validation review and approval, training (internal, continuing education, proficiency testing, annual GMP, etc.)Performs annual reviews and creates and maintains job plansExecutes human resources management functions as required for laboratory staff within scope

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess:

Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and techniques used in microbiology testingDemonstrated success in improving operational, quality, and safety performanceStrong problem solving skillsAbility to organize, communicate, teach, and work with others in an effective mannerKnowledge of federal, state, and local standards, regulations, guidelines and requirements effecting operations of a clinical reference laboratoryAbility to manage and schedule the work of othersAnalytical thinking and communication skills

Qualifications

Bachelors of Science degree requiredMinimum 5 years of experience in MicrobiologyMinimum 2 years in supervisory experience Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship

Additional Information

Position is Full-Time, Tuesday-Saturday, 3:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m., with additional hours, as needed.  Candidates currently living in a commutable distance to Lancaster, PA are encouraged to apply.
