Introduction
Scania’s purpose is to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system, creating a world of mobility better for business, society, and the environment. Exploring and accelerating the development of tomorrow's transport system is one of the driving forces. Imagine you could impact the next-gen Scania vehicles by working in a dynamic & diverse habitat. Yes, this opportunity gives you significant exposure to the vehicle development process.
You will have the opportunity to develop your engineering skills, to learn if the Scania work culture suits your future career goals and to show your abilities and talents over 20 weeks of thesis work.
Background
Scania offers a diverse fleet of trucks and buses, with various subcategories, which is further customizable as per the customer’s application - this is termed Scania's modular approach.
Contamination is a huge concern for any machine with various moving components which can hinder the performance of the vehicle as these components are designed to work to their maximum efficiency when operated in a particular ambient condition. Field/track tests are conducted to analyze how the contaminants could pose concerns regarding the functionality of the vehicle and the designs are made considering this. We, at Scania have investigated a more efficient CFD methodology to accurately predict snow buildup on vital components, enabling year-round design evaluations without the need for physical prototypes. Understanding snow accumulation for BEV vehicles is crucial as the battery and drivetrain component performance are highly dependent on the temperature.
Objective & Job description
There have been some investigations conducted that involved field tests & simulations on bluff body and BEV trucks to understand the properties of the snow and software capabilities to model the snow. Now to dive deep, we would like the thesis students to drive the methodology development forward by incorporating existing field test data into the simulation at a detailed level. Further, there is a need to use this methodology to understand the snow accumulation on the sensors particularly used on autonomous trucks, inclusive of simulation and the possibility to participate in field tests and climate chamber tests. The methodology development is based on external modeling, however, the end application involves interests of both internal (under the cab) and external snow modeling.
