Designs and delivers instructional systems and does so in a therapeutically appropriate manner. Teaches curriculum as mandated by Maine State standards. Manages the classroom in such a way as to maintain an educational atmosphere. Responsible for writing Individual Education Plans (IEP), report cards, and all necessary paperwork. Supervises Education Technicians. Perform the duties required to address the educational and behavioral needs of students participating in the special education program, implement individualized interventions as part of a student’s behavior plan, design and implement classroom behavioral management strategies to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task, provides support and individualized instruction at the student's developmental level for functional skills, utilizes direct teaching techniques as outlined within the student’s IEP and/or Behavior Plan and management of behavioral challenges exhibited by students in the special education setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Maine DOE Education Certification for Special Education teacher (cert 282) required for all teachers. Fingerprinting Certification (CHRC) required. Targeted need, provisional, or conditional certification in Special Education allowed with agreement that Cert 282 will be received in time frame allowed by DOE. Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Special Education eligibility required) with current Maine teaching certification. Classroom teaching with a focus on special education experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Music Education required and Education certification (614) required for Music Teacher. Special Education teacher certification (cert 282) also required as listed above. Bachelor’s degree in Art Education required and Education certification (620) required for Art Teacher. Special Education teacher certification (cert 282) also required as listed above. Excellent speaking and writing skills. Willing to work with emotionally disabled population. Bachelor's degree in Physical Education required and Education certification (510 or 515) for PE Teacher required. Provide behavior support and direct teaching to students to promote skill acquisition of functional and academic goals as outlined in the student’s Individualized Education Plan. Assist students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities. Accurate and timely completion of required documentation (e.g. data collection, progress notes, incident reports, etc.) Assesses each child’s social, educational and emotional needs and intervenes therapeutically to promote learning and positive interactions. Complete lesson plans, IEP's, MTP’s, Report Cards, Behavior Scales, and Educational Findings on established schedules, in addition to any other required paperwork. Plan and carry out weekly lesson plans based on the student’s IEP. Include activities that introduce, reinforce, review and enrich skills. Serve as part of the overall treatment team, communicating with the administration, parents, social workers, residential staff and medical staff. Provide verbal and written input, when required, to assist in the formulation of treatment plans. Supervise classroom management and primary crisis intervention, utilizing positive behavior management strategies. Administer, score, and evaluate standardized tests for each child on an established schedule. Attend MTP meetings for students as scheduled. Music teacher will create and implement a drama program, an innovative and integrated music curriculum, and work closely with teachers in developing and facilitating integrated music lessons. Art teacher will create and implement an innovative and integrated art curriculum and work closely with teachers in developing and facilitating integrated art lessons.
