Academic Acceleration Manager

The Manager, Academic Acceleration serves as a bridge between students and off reservation schools to ensure that tutoring programs support accelerating student learning and experiences. The Manager oversees and coordinates the portfolio program for students and families. The Manager is responsible for the hiring, managing and professional development of the tutors and other assigned staff in the department. Under the supervision of the Director, Education Program Services, they teach and instruct students in culturally appropriate academic, social, behavioral, and other educational skills; counsels, disciplines and supervises to meet the individual needs of assigned students; evaluates student performance. The Manager, Academic Acceleration champions the goals and priorities of the Tribe in a manner that reflects and upholds the Tribe’s vision, mission, and values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Manages and codesigns revisions of current educational programs and initiatives provided by the department in accordance with applicable law and policy. Implements established programs and collaborates with staff and the Tribal community in the development of new culturally sustaining programs with curriculum objectives and goals aligned with adopted state standards and the 2040 Vision. Serves on working groups as directed. Meets with and provides support and information to parents on a case-by-case basis as needed.

2. Collaborates to implement language curricula and classes for the Summer Academy, tutoring programs, and other educational programs and initiatives.  Supports the facilitation of various department events.

3. Confers with students, parents or guardians, and other staff to provide guidance and evaluation, encourage student achievement, or modify assignments or expectations related to the creation of the student portfolio. While evaluating and recording student progress, creates a learning space that is conducive to learning and establishes classroom goals or objectives in alignment with off reservations schools and prepares reports for parents or guardians.

4. Establishes and implements reasonable and culturally appropriate classroom rules and procedures governing student behavior and conduct; provides guidance, counseling and discipline to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct; monitors student learning and behavior regularly and seeks assistance where appropriate.

5. Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides reports for administrative purposes. Maintains up to date schedules, lesson plans, attendance records, and grade records both electronically and in written format for assigned students and subjects. Directs the activities of assigned tutors based on the needs of the students.

6. Actively maintains parent contact through various channels to create a strong bond with the community.

6. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Makes hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.

 EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.

Valid California Teaching Credential is preferred.

A minimum of 3 years of experience working as a full-time teacher is required.

A minimum of 3 years of direct supervisory experience is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

Must be willing and capable to learn the Serrano language.

Previous educational work in a tribal community with an understanding of teaching in culturally sustaining ways that enhance, and support student success is preferred.

Experience with instructional leadership, including demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, training design, assessment, culture building and developing along with leading teachers is required.

Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to work as a team is required.

Ability to communicate, write, and present effectively, and the demonstrated ability to be persuasive and interact with diverse audiences is required.

The ability to collect, analyze and interpret data is required.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

Valid California Teaching Credential is preferred.

As a condition of employment, candidates and incumbents are required to pass pre- and post-employment screening including Live-Scan, background, drug testing, and tuberculosis (TB) testing.

☐ Driving Responsibilities: Role requires regular commuting between locations. A valid driver's license and vehicle insurance with minimum liability limits is required. Role will not operate or drive Tribe-owned vehicles or patron vehicles.

☐ No Driving Responsibilities: Role does not require a driver’s license or insurance.
