Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro seeks an Academic Advisor to join a dynamic team of professionals dedicated to helping students identify their academic and professional goals as they embark on successful careers in the areas of health and human sciences. Professional advisors in the School of HHS Advising Center help coach, mentor, and advise students with a focus on personal, academic, and professional success as they move toward graduation and beyond. This position is a 12-month, EPA non-faculty position that will report to the Director of Advising for Health and Human Sciences. Position Summary The Academic Advisor functions as a case manager and advocates for School of Health and Human Sciences students as they navigate through college and life. Much of the position is devoted to hands-on work with undergraduate students through advising services and communications. The Academic Advisor will interact with various university offices and organizations to facilitate successful experiences among students in the departments and programs within the School. These duties may include but are not limited to the following: Advise and coach students on course registration, academic skill development, academic decisions and progress, and personal and professional development via in-person and virtual settings; Serve as an advocate for students including, but not limited to, connecting them with resources to aid in their academic and professional success and holistic wellbeing; Foster student success through implementation of evidence-based best practices in student advising and support; Assist in recruitment activities and retention initiatives within the School; May be assigned to teach first-year foundational course for academic and professional development based in purpose, values, and self-actualization. Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in a health and human sciences discipline, counseling, or a related field. May 2025 graduates will be considered; degree must be conferred before hiring. Experience engaging with university students at the undergraduate level, either as a faculty or staff member. Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates We also will strongly consider candidates that have certificates and/or training in areas such as: StrengthsQuest/Strengthsfinder, life coaching, academic coaching, etc.  Preferred Qualifications The academic advisor should have: One to three years of experience (two years of graduate assistantship work focused in student support or engagement equates to one year of professional experience) engaging with university students at the undergraduate level, either as a faculty or staff member. experience engaging in activities focused on retention, such as in academic advising, student academic coaching, student academic services, or student success. experience working with and being committed to a diverse community of learners is highly desirable. knowledge of undergraduate students, curriculum, university policies and procedures, and retention strategies. expertise or interest in the use of technology (Banner, Canvas, DegreeWorks, course scheduling software, etc.) to instruct, advise and mentor students. classroom teaching experience with demonstrated success is preferred. Percentage Of Time 70% Key Responsibility Foster student success through high-impact advising and academic support for undergraduate students in the School of Health and Human Sciences. Essential Tasks Provide individual and/or small group advising for registration, academic planning, and academic skill development. Advise and coach students via in-person and virtual settings. Support programs and opportunities to enhance student experiences in advising, retention, and academic skill development. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Facilitate an assigned project area to support an essential advising and student success function or initiative, including but not limited to: academic skill development, recruitment and retention, advising administration, focused caseload for a specific program or population, instruction of a first-year seminar, or other projects as deemed necessary for student success and retention needs. Essential Tasks Essential tasks would be relevant to the assigned project area and may include functions such as: Planning/delivering a workshop series for academic skill development; Coordinating HHS presence at University recruitment events and/or HHS-specific recruitment events. Facilitating advising operations such as student reports, curriculum change requests, and advising communications. Advising a specific student population or program. Teaching a first-year HHS course designed to help students identify their purpose in the context of life and career goals and values. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Support recruitment and retention of students to HHS and UNCG. Essential Tasks Participate in recruitment events such as Spartan Open House, Admitted Spartan Day, virtual HHS admissions webinars, etc., which occur on occasional evenings and/or weekends. Participate in SOAR, NAV1GATE, and other orientation/welcome events. Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility Collaborate with HHS colleagues and other UNCG professionals to facilitate student success. Essential Tasks Serve as an advocate for students and connect them with resources to aid in their academic and professional success. Build relationships with colleagues in HHS and other campus offices to help students maximize their academic and life success, which includes the following: Participation in ongoing advisor training and development. Completion of annual professional development. Possible co-instruction and/or mentorship of graduate assistants.
