**POSITION PURPOSE**
Under general supervision, the Academic Advisor at SCC serves as a member of a professional team providing comprehensive advising services for our students, parents, high school counselors and other stakeholders regarding multiple areas including program choices, curriculum, course placement, enrollment procedures, business office policies, transfer policies, and financial aid. The position works effectively with Student Affairs offices, faculty, and academic departments to meet the goals and objectives of the department/division and the college.
**RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS**
**Provide comprehensive academic advising and coaching to new, current and returning students.**
+ Advise students on appropriate course selection, troubleshoot issues, and overcome achievement barriers.
+ Identify at-risk students and develop academic recovery plans for improved retention and program completion.
+ Support students with academic progress concerns, warning, probation, and suspensions.
+ Guide students to college-wide services and community resources for career exploration and personal support.
+ Provide coaching and support to help students develop effective learning strategies, time management skills, and goal-setting techniques.
+ Interpret and translate SCC, Minnesota State, and Federal policies and guidelines into advising procedures and services.
+ Serve as an organizational liaison for assigned academic programs and student populations.
+ Assist with long-term academic and program planning through collaboration with division chairs and faculty.
+ Track and adjust academic plans, evaluate program requirements, and register students for courses.
**Plan and implement activities and events related to course placement, academic/career advising, financial aid, and transfer.**
+ Interpret assessment scores for course placement and provide resources and referrals.
+ Identify career and educational options for maximizing student achievement and goal attainment.
+ Utilize Advising technology tools to proactively communicate with students about opportunities for success.
+ Recognize relevant resources and success skills for students on varied paths on their educational journey, such as Adult Learners.
+ Plan and implement retention activities and facilitate Advising and Registration (A&R) sessions.
+ Advise students on appropriate first-semester course selection and degree audit interpretation.
+ Support the coordinator of the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) program.
**Maintain a thorough understanding of college policies, procedures, programs, and services.**
+ Provide accurate information on admission, registration and progress toward graduation/transfer.
+ Collaborate with the department supervisor to develop and monitor a comprehensive plan for continuous improvement.
+ Ensure data integrity, reliability, and accuracy of student records.
+ Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA.
+ Organize and prioritize tasks to meet department deadlines.
+ Represent the college professionally within the community.
+ Participate in professional development activities and maintain membership in relevant organizations.
+ Continuously develop coaching skills and utilize coaching techniques to empower students and promote their success.
+ Participate in program and event development and serve on college committees.
**Perform Other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.**
+ Represent the Academic Advising team on relevant institutional community committees.
+ Assist with coverage at the area Front Desks as assigned.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s Degree and one year of experience in a related field or a combination of both education and experience.
+ Experience maintaining confidentiality and complying with laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
+ Experience speaking to small and large groups.
+ Experience multitasking with strong organizational skills, prioritization skills and attention to detail.
+ Experience working independently while contributing to a team environment.
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience.
+ Demonstrated Coaching mindset and the ability to effectively coach students towards their academic and personal goals.
**Preferred Qualification**
+ Master’ **s** Degree in a related field with a minimum of one year of experience in advising, admissions, or registration within a Minnesota State College or University or a combination of both education and experience.
+ Knowledge of South Central College policies, procedures, programs, curriculum, services, and resources.
+ Experience with student record systems and specialty software. (ISRS, DARS, ImageNow)
+ Knowledge of student development theory in higher education.
+ Multilingual proficiency (spoken and written).
