Position Announcement Position Details Proposed Start Date 02/02/2025 Classification Title Advising and Student Services Rank N - No Rank Working Title Access Counselor & Consultant Department 331820 - IAS Disability Resource Center Position Number D94313 Representation AU - AAUP Renewable Renewable End date, if applicable Position FTE 1.0 Tenure Status N - not applicable Position Summary Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept Position Summary The Access Counselor & Consultant (AC&C) applies a clear understanding of Title II of Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Fair Housing Act (FHA), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), (ORS) 659A.103-145, ORS 447.210-280, and Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA), to engage with the interactive process with disabled students to determine eligibility for ADA services. The AC&C collaborates with disabled students to determine reasonable accommodations based on disability-related functional limitations and environmental barriers. The AC&C may focus some of their work on an area of expertise including but not limited to neurodiversity inclusion, blind and low-vision access, and D(d)eaf and hard-of-hearing access.
The Access Counselor & Consultant will also engage in a faculty-facing interactive process to assist the Director in evaluating fundamental alteration concerns in order to maintain the integrity of impacted academic courses and programs.
Throughout the interactive process with faculty and students, the Access Counselor & Consultant considers all relevant information, including the nuances of a student’s disability experience and the intersection with the unique characteristics of a student’s courses, academic program, and/or university life to determine reasonable accommodations and provide auxiliary aids and services.
In order to provide robust and responsive services and support for students with diverse backgrounds,, the Access Counselor & Consultant anticipates, accepts, and respects differences; adapts to the diverse styles and needs of colleagues, faculty, and students; advocates for services that facilitate equity for diverse students; advocates for and supports programs that will enhance the understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including disability as diversity; uses an intersectional framework for understanding and communicating with the campus community and students from other cultures; and integrates cultural knowledge into work at every level.
The Access Counselor & Consultant uses their knowledge, skills, and creativity to ensure that accommodations are appropriately approved or denied and that approved accommodations are implemented by on-campus partners. The AC&C acts as a resource to students, faculty, and staff. Minimum Qualifications BA/BS with 3+ years of related experience experience in higher education disability services OR Master’s in counseling, higher education administration, social work, or related field with 1+ year of experience in higher education, counseling, education, social work, or related field.
Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other applicable laws and regulations. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field (Human Services, Social Work, Higher Education, Disability Studies, counseling, or related field) 2 years of experience in a higher education disability service office Knowledge of and experience with interpreting relevant regulations including Title II of Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Fair Housing Act (FHA), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), (ORS) 659A.103-145, ORS 447.210-280, and Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) Experience evaluating the functional impacts of disabling diagnoses and conditions in the context of higher education 1 year of experience with adaptive technology (AT) American Sign Language (ASL) fluency Bilingual Relevant certifications such as CRC, NCC, LCSW. Work Days/Hours Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be $54,684 to 58,044, but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
