Accessibility QA Engineer
At Instructure we build Canvas and a portfolio of other educational products to help teachers and students learn together. We intend to support education for everyone, regardless of their individual abilities, wherever and however they learn best.
It is therefore critical to us that we develop our software to meet and exceed the accessibility needs of our users and all relevant accessibility standards. We’re hiring an Accessibility QA Engineer to join our a11y team to not only help us catch any accessibility issues that slip past our very a11y-conscious engineering teams, but also to help prevent accessibility problems before they occur by coaching our Design, Product Management, and Engineering teams.
What you’ll doCoach and influence our R&D teams on accessible design, development, and testing best practicesProvide designers with accessibility advice and best practices during design reviewsTest new features before they release as part of our final accessibility audit; all our teams do their own testing first, you’re there as the final line of defense for our customersInvestigate new accessibility technologies and standards, audit existing products for compliance, and help build remediation plansCoordinate with external auditors and vendors to complete third-party accessibility auditsPresent accessibility demonstrations to customers and other departments internallyConduct new-hire accessibility training for software engineers and other R&D personnelUpdate and maintain product VPATs
What you’ll needAt least one year of experience specifically testing or auditing web products for accessibility, including at least one screen reader (JAWS, NVDA, and/or VoiceOver)A working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 criteria, and familiarity with how it is incorporated into accessibility expectations and legislation globallyDemonstrated ability to research deep and challenging topics, such as how specific technologies or product features interact with WCAGDemonstrated ability to handle and influence through ambiguity, such as when engaging with a brand new team that doesn’t yet understand accessibility wellAbility to work hours that overlap US - Pacific timezone (approximately 8 am - 10am Pacific) as neededAbility to frequently determine why an accessibility issue might be occurring and make suggestions on how to fix it, not just report the issue
