The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) Corrections Service Center is responsible for program accounting, cash management, resident accounts, and revenue/expenditure control for the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) that support six adult facilities and one youth facility. These facilities keep our communities safer by reducing harm through supportive intervention, empowering change, and restoring lives. JOB DESCRIPTION As an Accounting Assistant Technician at the DAFS Corrections Service Center (CSC) located at the Central Office in Augusta, you will work closely with the CSC Senior Financial Analyst, Accounting Support Specialist and the Department of Corrections staff to perform necessary payment processing related to restitution and supervision payments. This position plays an important role in transactional processing by ensuring payments are logged and coded correctly. Additional daily tasks include, but are not limited to, completing a daily check log; collection of documentation for direct bills and associated Business Office Review; processing required cash receipts; and printing victim checks. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to effectively manage daily tasks, provide excellent customer service, and adapt to changing priorities. The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while also working independently is required. In addition to a financial background, the qualified candidate must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work well in a team environment. Experience with MainePays, Advantage, and CORIS is preferred. While the position work location is in Augusta, there may be occasional in-state travel. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES + Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures. + Knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices. + Knowledge of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and business English. + Knowledge of office methods and procedures. + Knowledge of business mathematics. + Ability to verify, code, compute, and/or reconcile data on standard documents. + Ability to perform detailed work involving written or numerical data. + Ability to prepare complete and accurate accounting and financial reports and statements. + Ability to type varied routine business correspondence from draft or original source documents to revised or final form. + Ability to organize and maintain computerized and/or manual files. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, training, and/or experience in accounting or another closely related field demonstrating competency in reviewing and maintaining records and applying basic accounting principles.
