Experience in the field of Radiologic Technology, Radiation Safety, or related field preferred. Position Information Class Code: B063C Grade: GS08 FLSA Status: EXEMPT Salary Range: $45,010.00 - $65,265.00 Summary The Health Physicist is responsible for the review and renewal of radioactive material licenses, performing compliance inspections, and environmental monitoring activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Functions Examines license renewal applications for completeness and accuracy; determines eligibility of applicant, qualifications of users of radioactive materials, storage and safety procedures; and amends license applications by writing in specific conditions. Conducts on-site inspections of facilities which use ionizing radiation. Observes and assesses safety procedures by reviewing and evaluating radiological monitoring systems and records, radiation surveys and leak tests, procedure manuals, and personnel records containing information on employee exposure. May serve as safety officer for the agency/institution by investigating employee exposure and the misuse of radioactive materials and making recommendations for correcting problems. Provides technical assistance to licensees or registrants in the completion of compliance forms and answers public inquiries. Informs licensees of deficiencies. Serves as a member of the Radiological Emergency Response Team by conducting surveys and collecting environmental samples. Performs other duties as assigned. Dimensions Frequent in-state and occasional out-of-state travel is required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of state and federal laws governing nuclear health and safety hazards. Knowledge the principles of nuclear physics involved in the detection of radiation and the application of safety standards to control exposure. Knowledge of radiological testing equipment and testing procedures utilized at nuclear energy facilities. Ability to conduct on-site inspections of facilities to determine radiation hazards, document findings, and make recommendations for correcting problems. Ability to provide technical information on methods of dealing with radiation hazards and procedures to be followed in radiation incidents. Ability to operate and calibrate radiation detection equipment. Ability to examine Nuclear Regulatory Commission license applications for accuracy and completeness. Ability to train inspection teams in the nuclear energy field. Minimum Qualifications The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related field; plus four years of experience in health compliance review and inspection.
