The Adjunct Counselor (Accessibility Services) performs activities and the delivery of services as a team member of SUNY WCC's Accessibility Services. Working with a caseload of students with general disabilities the Adjunct Counselor ensures caseload students have appropriate accommodations to provide access to college programs, activities, and services. The incumbent reviews/interprets documentation and evaluates diagnostic information for students with varying disabilities to determine, as a team member, the eligibility for protection under Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment (ADAAA), Section 504, and other applicable legislation. The Adjunct Counselor assists current and potential students with disabilities in the planning and implementing their educational, career and personal goals and objectives. Additionally, the incumbent provides guidance and advocacy skill development to students with disabilities as they proceed through postsecondary academic life. The Adjunct Counselor will:
+ Conducts student intake interviews with requesting students to determine program eligibility and reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
+ Manages an active caseload of students with disabilities using established mechanisms to monitor and track outcomes
+ Assists current and potential students with disabilities in planning and implementing their educational, career, and personal goals and objectives.
+ Maintains reporting statistics and records in accordance with professional, institutional, and state guidelines.
+ Proactively provide effective outreach, connection and advocacy to students who are working with Accessibility Services to promote student persistence and retention.
+ Assists students in clarifying their educational goals and determining appropriate accommodations.
+ Participates in the facilitation of Accessibility Services orientation events to foster students' sense of belonging on campus and to familiarize them and their family members with the department's services, policies, and procedures.
+ Refers students to relevant campus and community resources as needed.
+ Maintains a working knowledge in assistive and adaptive technology and its role in serving students with disabilities.
+ Participates in Accessibility Services meetings and related committees
+ Maintains knowledge of current disability laws to ensure compliance and makes ADAAA recommendations to the College.
+ Participates in relevant professional development opportunities to stay up to date with trends, legal precedence, etc.
+ Consults and serves as resource to the college community, especially faculty, regarding student accommodations and disability information.
+ Conducts seminars and workshops as part of outreach programming to support student persistence.
Job Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An Adjunct Counselor must have one of the following:
+ A Master's and Bachelor's degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field and one (1) year of professional experience.
+ A Bachelor's degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field and three (3) years of experience.
+ A Bachelor's degree in a non-specific field and two (2) years of experience, along with a Master's degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field.
The successful candidate will have experience with delivering comprehensive case managed counseling and a thorough understanding of exemplary approaches to supporting students with documented disabilities. The successful candidate must possess a high level of attention to detail, excellent written and oral communications skills, and an ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while remaining organized. They must also have a proactive nature, exceptional judgement, and a collegial and team-oriented temperament. Proficiency in software systems including Microsoft Office applications and assistive technologies is required. The ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information, an ability to be flexible and adaptive to changing needs and priorities, a strong student-centered orientation, and an ability to work with a team of diverse faculty, staff and students are essential.
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of non-traditional adult students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience counseling and supporting community college students and those with documented disabilities, including those with autism spectrum disorders is preferred. Bilingual verbal and written fluency is strongly preferred. Experience using platforms such as PeopleSoft, Degree Works, and ACCOMMODATE is desirable. Candidates with experience with student support services, demonstrated intercultural competence and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of the needs of marginalized and racially minoritized student populations are also strongly preferred.
Additional Information:
WORK SCHEDULE: The work schedule is Monday through Friday. Hours are between 9 am and 7 pm, 28 hours per week. This is an on-campus, in-person position.
POSITION EFFECTIVE: The position will remain open until filled.
HOURLY RATE OF PAY: $45.32 per hour. No benefits.
