Prior to Europeans making contact with the western hemisphere, the American Southwest was the homeland of numerous Indigenous communities, each with their own distinct culture. Centuries of cultural interactions and clashes between the Indigenous population, Europeans, Mexicans, and Euroamericans transformed the Southwest into a region of great cultural diversity. During the modern era, the Southwest region shifted into the international spotlight due to issues concerning immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, labor strife, and the role both play in the American political system. This course will examine the interactions between American Indians, Spaniards, Mexicans, and Euroamericans, and it will emphasize themes and issues concerning colonialism, race and ethnicity, sexuality and gender, and violence.
