ADME Automation Summer Intern (On-Site)

IQVIA is hiring an ADME Automation Intern to support our Indianapolis office in the Summer of 2025! This position will be on-site.

Overview:

The intern will collaborate closely with IQVIA's scientists on high-value projects throughout the summer, gaining hands-on experience and expertise in core competencies. The primary focus will be on supporting an ongoing project aimed at creating a streamlined database for quick deployment of assays across various machines. This initiative involves unifying Liquid Classes to eliminate redundancy across systems, enhancing efficiency and consistency in laboratory operations. In addition to project work, the intern will receive comprehensive education on the application of technology in laboratory-based science. This includes training on the use of advanced laboratory equipment and software, with a particular emphasis on Tecan scripting. The internship offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.

Intern Project Proposal: Optimization of Automated Liquid Handlers for DNA/RNA Extraction Assays

Project Overview: We are pleased to offer an intern project focused on optimizing the use of automated liquid handlers to enhance the efficiency and standardization of DNA/RNA extraction assays. This project aims to streamline laboratory workflows and improve the accuracy and reproducibility of nucleic acid extractions.

Project Description: The primary goal of this project is to program and optimize automated liquid handlers for DNA/RNA extraction assays. The intern will be responsible for fine-tuning key parameters and evaluating the performance of the automated workflow compared to traditional manual methods. This evaluation will consider factors such as accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the development and implementation of a database for assay deployment.Collaborate with scientists to unify Liquid Classes and reduce system redundancy.Participate in training sessions on laboratory technology and Tecan scripting.Conduct experiments and collect data to support ongoing research projects.Analyze data and prepare reports summarizing findings.Maintain accurate records of experiments and project progress.Present project updates and findings to the team.Programming and Optimization: Program the automated liquid handler and optimize critical parameters to ensure optimal performance for DNA/RNA extraction assays.Workflow Evaluation: Compare the automated workflow with manual extraction methods, assessing accuracy, efficiency, and cost. Conduct experiments and analyze data to determine the benefits and potential limitations of automation.Troubleshooting: Identify and troubleshoot any errors or issues that arise during the automation process, ensuring the reliability and robustness of the automated workflow.Documentation: Meticulously document the methods used, optimization steps, and results obtained. This documentation will serve as a valuable resource for future reference and potential publication.

Learning Opportunities: This project offers a unique opportunity for the intern to:

Gain hands-on experience with advanced laboratory automation technologies.Develop programming skills specific to automated liquid handlers.Enhance their understanding of DNA/RNA extraction techniques and their applications.Learn to evaluate and compare different laboratory workflows in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and cost.Improve problem-solving skills through troubleshooting and optimization tasks.Expected Outcomes: By the end of the internship, the intern is expected to have successfully optimized the automated liquid handler for DNA/RNA extraction assays.Demonstrated the advantages of automation over manual methods in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and cost.Developed a comprehensive set of documented methods and protocols for future use.Contributed valuable insights to the ongoing efforts to improve laboratory automation and standardization. We believe this project will provide a challenging yet rewarding experience for the intern, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge for a career in laboratory automation and molecular biology.

Qualifications:

Strong verbal and written communication skills Must be currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in science, including but not limited to Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, or related.Strong organizational skills Able to work both independently and collaboratively

*Must be local to the Indianapolis office for the duration of the summer.*
