Examples of Work Incumbent of this position provides administrative support in the permitting process for the Horticulture Commission within the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry. The Horticulture Commission issue permits to nursery stock dealers which sell nursery stock such as bedding plants, potted plants, etc.; cut flower dealers selling singly cut flowers or flowers in bunches and nursery certificates permitting holders to operate wholesale nurseries. Incumbent also issues apiary permits to beekeepers. There are five types of beekeepers: commercial honey producers, commercial queen and package producers, pollination services, hobbyist and apiary research. These permits impact the livelihood of several thousand people in the state of Louisiana and range in cost from $4.00 to $130.00, bringing in a large amount of revenue for the Division. Supervision for this position is received from an Agricultural Environmental Specialist Administrative Coordinator. 60% Incumbent processes approximately 4,000 Nursery Stock Dealer, Cut Flower Dealer, Nursery Certification I & II and Apiary permits annually. Makes sure each applicant pays the proper fees for permit. Inputs information on each applicant into database and issues permit. Incumbent also issues reminders to applicants with expiring permit. Upon request, mails nursery tags to growers; stamps and mails apiary yard makers. 15% Incumbent provides administrative support by preparing material needed by AES Administrative Program Coordinator for Apiary or Import Fire Ant (IFA) meetings, obtaining supplies, preparing and maintaining correspondence and handling telephone calls. 10% Responsible for handling telephone calls for Baton Rouge district inspectors. Gives permit information to interested people over the phone by explaining what each permit allows applicant to do and explaining the horticulture laws, rules and regulations to them. 10% Maintains files for renewal applications, Apiary and Imported Fire Ant (IFA) programs. Provides updated permit lists to the LDAF website designer monthly. 5% Processes reference material applications. Assists walk ins with request related to division.
