POSITION SUMMARY:

Marathon Petroleum Logistics is seeking an experienced Advanced GIS Analyst to support GIS data management, analysis, and mapping initiatives across all Marathon Petroleum Logistics operating areas. This role is essential in maintaining accurate GIS datasets that inform strategic decision-making across Business Development, Operations, and Compliance functions.

The Advanced GIS Analyst will be responsible for managing pipeline and other company GIS data, conducting regulatory and compliance analyses (including HCA, Spill, and Class Location assessments), and supporting state and federal reporting requirements. Additionally, this position will develop operational and specialized maps, reports, and dashboards (both web-based and hardcopy) to support various business needs.

Other key responsibilities include providing GIS support for internal applications and responding to requests from cross-functional teams such as Environmental, Land, Accounting, and Integrity. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical GIS expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments in a dynamic work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Creates spatial and tabular data in the Enterprise Geographical Information System (GIS) from vendors into the correct coordinate system using basic geodetic principles; geo-references digital maps to align with real ground locations using survey monuments, GPS and other data as controls.

Performs quality control operations to ensure the accuracy and completeness of all data; researches and corrects problems with data using spatial and logical analyses, legal descriptions and boundaries, use scripts, queries and other tools to obtain and/or correct missing or incorrect spatial and tabular data.

Creates/Submits various reports and permits to include: State One Call Boundary reporting to report the pipeline location and description of the pipelines which reduces the risk of a pipeline damage; submit updates to state agencies (Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC), North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC)) and renews/updates permits annually or as needed; and works with Compliance/Integrity on analyzing and calculating mileage for reporting to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).  

Develop custom maps and visualizations for internal and external stake holders, including regulatory agencies and landowners; develop custom online maps and dashboards using GIS Portal Environment.

Works with Compliance/Integrity to prepare for Federal and State audits in meeting regulatory requirements, including mapping and mileage reporting.

Supports various GIS requests and serves as primary contact to provide technical support for other groups such as Operations, Engineering, Land, Business Development, Environmental, Tax and Accounting and project management teams to support the business needs.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience, Computer Science, GIS, or a closely related field, demonstrating a solid foundation in geospatial sciences and their application in the oil and gas industry.

Extensive experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro, Portal, and associated GIS tools/extensions, with the capability to leverage these technologies for advanced spatial analyses, data management, and visualization tasks.

Proficient in cartography, including the application of coordinate systems and projections, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of spatial data for mapping and geospatial analysis.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet firm deadlines with minimal supervision, supporting project teams across the organization.

Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain detailed records and documentation. Excellent communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including project teams, regulatory bodies, and landowners.

Prior experience in the oil and gas sector, particularly with pipeline projects and regulatory requirements, is preferred.
