The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serving as the Vascular Surgery provider is a faculty member credentialed and privileged to serve as a licensed independent practitioner and is a member of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws.

 

Our specialized vascular surgery team focuses on treating patients with diseases of the arteries, including carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms, peripheral artery disease, and vein problems. Our population includes patients with atherosclerotic disease, end-stage renal disease, and genetic aortopathies. As part of an academic medical center, our vascular physicians are at the forefront of diagnosing aortic, arterial, venous, and other vascular diseases. This entails a blend of up-to-date medical practices, collaborative decision-making, and rigorous follow-up care. Regardless of the complexity of their condition, every patient can expect a patient-centered and personalized care plan. The Vascular Surgery APP has the primary responsibility of direct patient care within an inpatient setting for patients admitted to the Vascular Surgery Service and other services with vascular surgery consultation needs. The Vascular Surgery APP is responsible for partnering with the patient and family and nurse case manager to impact timely and effective discharges and patient flow; impact patient and family experience through communication and education; mentor residents, clinical nurses, and others; promote an interdisciplinary approach to care; support new processes to improve patient outcomes; participate in quality improvement processes; develop pathways and protocols to standardize care. As the service evolves and expands, there will be opportunities to practice in outpatient vascular surgery and wound care settings.
The ideal candidate will be interested in joining a thriving and collaborative academic practice caring for patients requiring highly complex care. We strongly encourage participation in national Vascular conferences and research endeavors. In addition to key job responsibilities, qualifications and other job requirements listed below, the Vascular Surgery APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.

 

Hours:
Inpatient service: 12-hour daytime shifts, 3 days a week. 4 hours of administrative time per week.
Outpatient service: 10-hour daytime shifts – 4 days a week

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Activities (not related to teaching or research): Assure the safe, efficient, high-quality quality and patient-centered management of care to patients with vascular disease, including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s status; developing, monitoring, and revising, as appropriate, an evidence-based treatment plan that addresses diagnoses, patterns of disease, risk factors, and treatment alternatives; treat many common acute and chronic health problems; interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe and manage medications and other therapies, provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and, refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to diagnose and treat vascular surgery patients primarily in an inpatient environment.Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifying normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and admission and transfer orders.Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and effectively communicate and document information.Perform procedures beyond core duties as identified by the vascular surgery services, such as wound and drain management.Facilitate communication among patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across the healthcare continuum.Evaluate quality outcomes for patients receiving care from this team by participating in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.Stay informed about current developments and trends in vascular surgery educational programs, in-services, professional associations, and current literature.Develop expertise in coordinating and delivering care to patients on the vascular surgery service.Collaborate with cross-department specialty care teams and primary care providers in providing consultative care for patients with vascular surgery needs.

Scholarly Activities (improvement science, research, writing, abstracts, grant supported work, presentations, etc.): Keep abreast of changes in field and applies knowledge to identify and recommend enhancements to clinical quality, patient experience/satisfaction, length of stay and to achieve improvement that demonstrates a higher standard of care. Assesses and recommends initiatives to improve performance indicators related to patient experience, quality, and costs. Professional development meeting the expectations of ongoing certification. Demonstrates success or productivity in the field as evidenced by securing research funding, publication in journals and/or other forms of peer presentations.

 

Teaching/ Clinical Supervision: Support OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development, and assessment of program curricula for professional specialty area; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects, and assessment measures. Teach program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assisting at-risk students. May serve as the faculty of record and principle contact for PA/NP students and evaluate the student’s performance.

Deliver individual instruction to fellows, residents, and other clinical learners to support their personal program of learning in the applicable specialty area. Provide instruction and review of the practices, policies, and procedures in a variety of functions; including but not limited to development of treatment plans, interpretation of clinical diagnostic data; developing orders; patient and family communication and education; management of medical equipment, electronic medical records; performing procedures, and transitioning patients to the next level of care. Assures adherence to the specialty specific protocols, best practices, quality, and organizational indicators. Provides APP input to the residents’ performance as a provider in the clinical setting.

Required Qualifications Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.Registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Physician Assistant, or a Nurse Practitioner license from the Oregon Board of Nursing; Drug Enforcement Association certification required.
