The University of Chicago currently includes Mitchell Hospital, a 395-bed adult hospital facility, Comer Children’s Hospital with 155 beds, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, a 525,000 square foot outpatient clinic and surgery facility. In addition, a 1.2 million square foot new hospital, the Center for Care and Discovery, opened in February 2013.

The Department of Radiology includes more than 100 full-time faculty members, clinical associates, advanced practice providers, and postdoctoral researchers. A tradition of excellence in patient care, basic, clinical, and translational sciences, combined with the strengths of one of the world's top academic institutions provides the foundation for a robust career in the University of Chicago Medical System. The University of Chicago Medicine is a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, a Comprehensive Stroke Care Center, and a referral center for numerous neurologic and otolaryngologic disorders.


Job Summary
 

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research.

Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical practice and medical care protocols.

Perform daily rounds and communicate patient progress to the medical staff and radiologists, including writing daily progress notes.

Orchestrate patient discharge and make additional referrals for home care or outpatient services as needed.

Helping to manage patient consults and follow ups in the IR clinic.

Order laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; write pre-procedure orders; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.

Perform specific and invasive procedures as detailed in APPs Delineation of Privileges, including but not limited to catheter pulls, catheter placement and exchange, paracentesis, drain evaluation, and drain removals.

Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.

Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nursing staff, patient, family, physicians, and community resources for coordination of patient care.

Make recommendations to referring physicians, patients, and patients’ family under the guidance of the interventional radiologist.

Identify and participate in quality assurance on the unit. Help with process and quality improvement initiatives.  May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.

Helping with educational activities for trainees and staff.

Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.

Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.

Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.

Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master of Science (MS) for those with licensure prior to 1995, Registered Nurse and completion of a certificate program.  Current national certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse recognized by the Board of Nursing.

Physician Assistant (PA) – Successful completion of an educational program for physician assistants or surgeon assistants accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, or by that committee’s predecessor or successor entities.

Experience:

Minimum of two years clinical experience in related area of specialty, preferably with experience in Interventional Radiology, operative or procedural practice, or critical care environment.

Licenses and Certifications:

BLS/ACLS certification.

Preferred Competencies

Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.

Ability to interview and obtain medical information.

Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership, and teaching skills.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
