CORE JOB SUMMARY  

 

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN is also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.  

 

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS  

 

Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.  

Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients. 

Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs. 

Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities 

Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability. 

Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations. 

Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. 

Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients. 

Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals. 

Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools. 

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS  

 

Education: 

Master’s degree in relevant field 

 

Certification and Licensing: 

Valid State of Florida APRN License 

May hold DEA License if deemed necessary and appropriate by department. 

Holds current and valid ACLS and BLS Certification from an American Heart Association approved vendor 

 

Experience:   

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience 

 

  

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: 

Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions. 

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. 

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines. 

Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment. 

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. 

 

Department Specific Functions 

  

For day shift positions:   

Core schedule is Monday through Friday.  

Shifts range from 8-12 hours depending on assignment. 

Works collaboratively with attending on medical team and/or ED, as necessary.  

Rounds with MD or individually as assigned. 

Bills for visits if assigned. 

Admits patients as necessary during duration of shift. 

Receives transfers (ICU/procedures) and coordinates floor assignments. 

Acts as a liaison with floor nursing staff, promotes nursing critical thinking and scope of practice.  

Collaborates with Care Coordination (Social Work, Case Management and Discharge Planning). 

Coordinates discharge efforts for medical team and ensures all discharge needs are met. 

Answers to Rapid Responses (Code Rescue) and Code Blues called for assigned patients. 

Collaborates with administration in process improvement activities. 

Collaborates with departmental initiatives to leverage hiring practices to promote equity amongst the Department (may be asked to join NP Hiring Committee). 

Removes Central Venous Catheters/Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters/Midlines (if trained to do so). 

Removes Temporary Dialysis Catheters (if trained to do so). 

Removes stitches from tracheostomies and percutaneous gastrostomy feeding tubes. 

Removes chest tubes (if trained to do so). 

Cross coverage for night shift if necessary. 

May be required to work during inclement weather and respond to catastrophic events, as necessary. 

    

 

For night shift positions: 

 

Core schedule is 14 shifts/month. (12-hour shifts).  Monday through Sunday (7 days on/7 days off). 

Maintains flexibility in schedule to ensure all shifts at night are staffed. 

Performs floor night coverage of medical teams as assigned. 

Answers assigned team phone for entirety of shift.   

Maintains record of floor calls and delivers morning sign out to teams daily. 

Admits patients overnight to appropriate medical teams in collaboration with night Attending. 

Receives transfers (ICU/procedures) and coordinates floor assignments. 

Acts as a liaison with floor nursing staff, promotes nursing critical thinking and scope of practice.  

Collaborates with Care Coordination (Social Work, Case Management and Discharge Planning) if necessary.
