GI-Full Time 

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients in an outpatient setting. The APRN also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.  The APRN is responsible for assessing physical and psychosocial status of patients in an outpatient clinic setting by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies. Assist physicians in performing medical procedures, up to and including blood drawing, vital signs and nursing assessments, history and physical. The APRN will independently access, and follow Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients in UHealth clinics which could include travel to the UHealth Clinics in Doral and Coral Gables, the UHealth Lennar Foundation Medical Center.   This position is M-F, and requires 7-8 half days in outpatient ambulatory clinics.  The APRN is required to take CITI certification in order to participate as provider in our Clinical Research Studies.  This may require blood drawing as necessary 

 

Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.  

Writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.  

Initiates, evaluates, and renews therapy plans for infusion therapy 

Initiates, evaluates and renews laboratory tests based on therapy protocols 

Initiates and facilitates clinical research protocols and coordinates patient care with research staff.  

Participates in clinical research as an investigator 

Obtains complete medical history independent of supervision by the physician.  

See patients in followup in between infusions and post procedure as necessary 

Initiate and Maintain infusion orders for non-chemo infusions as per protocol 

Orders appropriate laboratory tests according to practice guidelines.  

Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of care that is appropriate for the patient and family.  

Actively participates in quality assurance programs and peer review activities. 

Responsible for providing assistance to physicians in the care and treatment of patients.  

Provides medical support to staff, triaging and implementing care in a knowledgeable and skillful manner, as evidenced by team feedback and documentation in medical records.  

Administers nursing assessments to include performing examinations, giving injections and assessing a patient's health status.  

Assess severity of patient's condition, determining and directing patients to appropriate medical providers.  

Provide peer-to-peer reviews with insurance carriers in support of patients medications 

Consents patients for GI procedures, and places orders for procedures and preps 

Maintain EMR inbox and close encounters in a timely fashion according to UMMG guidelines 

Close encounters within 48 hours according to UMMG guidelines. 

Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.  

Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients. 

Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs. 

Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities 

Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability. 

Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations. 

Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. 

Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients. 

Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals. 

Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools. 

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS  

 

Education: 

Master’s degree in relevant field 

 

Certification and Licensing: 

Valid State of Florida APRN License 

 

Experience:   

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience. One year as APRN required 

Previous experience in GI or Hepatology practice as RN or APRN 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: 

Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions. 

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. 

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines. 

Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment. 

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. 

Ensuring compliance with local, state and federal health regulations.  

Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques  

Performs in tactful and professional manner. 

CITI Certification for Clinical Research Study participation 

Previous experience with EPIC EMR software, or demonstrated ability to manage patients in EMR
