We are looking for a Disability Management Advisor to join us in the exciting work we do in the Disability Department. Reporting to Director, Employee Resource Centre, this position is responsible to ensure that workplace injuries and other disability programs are managed. The position plays an important role by providing expert advice to managers and other key stakeholders in all aspects of workplace injuries, disability programs and attendance management.

What You Get To Do: 

Disability Claims Management

Oversees all aspects of disability management at ATCO by effectively managing WCB, STD/LTD, medical leave files including requests for accommodation, confirming medical work restrictions and safely returning employees back to work in addition to assisting employees with application for Federal programs and monitor of benefit periods prior to expiry of benefits. Responsible to effectively manage workplace injury processes and provide guidance and support to both managers, Human Resource Business Partners, and employees. Work collaboratively with management to strategically manage claims and manage claims costs. Maintains appropriate disability files for employees on sick leave, STD/LTD, WCB or modified duties. Establishes and maintains practices and procedures manual that are reflective of company policy, legislation and professional ethics. Regular updating of the disability management process is necessary to ensure that the most current practices are documented with a focus on continuous improvement. Create written responses on behalf of ATCO for WCB claim appeals and requests for cost relief and represent ATCO at WCB appeal hearing.

Alcohol & Drug Standard Support 

Works closely with managers/supervisors/team leads, Human Resources and Health & Safety to assist in the administration of ATCO’s Alcohol & Drug Standard. Coordinates testing and/or confirming results for Site Access testing, post-incident testing and reasonable cause testing, return to duty, unannounced testing. Reviews Substance Abuse Expert (SAE) reports to provide recommendations to Human Resources and leadership on next steps.

Return to Work Activities 

Develops and implements return to work plans. Oversee the return-to-work process by confirming medical work restrictions, determining appropriate modified duties and aligning with relevant legislation. Collaborate with various team members including but not limited to managers, supervisors, team leads, HR colleagues to ensure that the return-to-work plans are successful. The Disability Management Advisor will work closely with the third-party provider, and WCB and/or independently to obtain medical clearance for work ensuring that safety sensitive positions are represented appropriately. Consulting/Providing Expert Advice  Provides training and education on practices standards and procedures. Represent ATCO in grievance and arbitration proceedings as required.

Who You Are:

Degree in social science/health related field is desired or a Diploma supplemented with experience and Disability Management course work Registered Rehabilitation Professional (RRP), Canadian Society of Professionals in Disability Management (CRTWC), Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP), or a related professional designation through a recognized association is preferred 5 years of related progressive professional experience in Disability Management including return to work planning and rehabilitation practices Expert knowledge of legislation such as Human Rights, the Workers’ Compensation Act, and privacy legislation Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all interested stakeholders Knowledge in Alcohol & Drug policy application, treatment recommendations and return to work agreements Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to influence decision making in a supportive and constructive manner Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products; Ability to interpret and apply corporate policies and procedures, STD/LTD contracts, and collective agreements, provincial WCB policies Knowledge of a variety of medical conditions, available treatments, disability duration guidelines, medical terminology, assessments and resulting work restrictions.
