About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose

 

Our Lihir operation in the Environmental Compliance team is now recruiting for the role of Advisor Environment. Reporting to the Lead Environmental Compliance, the successful candidate is responsible for supporting the Lihir operation in adhering to environmental regulations, permits and Newmont environmental standards.

The role will have the following responsibilities but are not limited to:

 

Recognised as the subject matter expert in one or several of the following areas of environmental management: air emissions, climate change, domestic and industrial waste, biodiversity, water, waste rock, tailings, and hazardous materials  Regularly conduct environmental assurance activities to assess compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and company standardsMonitor and report on environmental performance and compliance metrics to relevant internal and external stakeholdersIdentify potential compliance risks and develop corrective action plans Implement programs to continuously improve environmental performanceDeliver environmental awareness programs to employees and business partnersCreate and update environmental programs, procedures, and standard operating proceduresQualification, Training & Experience

 

Bachelor-level qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Climate Change, Environmental Engineering, or related3 – 7 years of relevant working experience in a similar role within the Papua New Guinea mining or oil and gas sectorsKnowledge and experience in one or several of the following environmental management areas: air emissions, climate change, domestic and industrial waste, biodiversity, water, waste rock, tailings, and hazardous materialsKnowledge of gold mining and processing operations and associated environmental management systemsExperienced with Papua New Guinea environmental legislation and the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA)Understanding and experience in external engagement with communities, external bodies, and regulatory authorities
