Advisor / Sr. Advisor – Lab Automation Research Scientist

We are seeking a highly motivated Lab Automation Engineer to join the Automation Core Lab at the Lilly Corporate Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. The successful candidate will have foundational knowledge of state-of-the-art lab automation equipment and industry-based experience working with research scientists to leverage automation to accelerate, improve and facilitate workflows.

You will have the opportunity to:

Ensure that common lab automation equipment is properly maintained and in good working order. This includes stand-alone liquid handlers (e.g., Hamilton), micro-dispensers, plate readers and washers, as well as several fully integrated robotic workstations. Ability to create methods/scripts, trouble-shoot issues and train users on these instruments is also required.

Supervise and aid a Team of automation engineers whose responsibilities include equipment installation, maintenance, QC, script writing.

Work collaboratively with lab research scientists across the Lilly Corporate Center to optimize research efficiencies through implementation of automation process improvements and novel technologies.

Basic Qualifications

PhD in engineering/bio-engineering or STEM-related disciplines with a minimum of 3 years of experience (following post-doctoral education) or

M.S. in engineering/bio-engineering or STEM-related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of experience or

B.S. in engineering/bio-engineering or STEM-related discipline with a minimum of 12 years of experience.

Experience should include at least 3 years of relevant industry experience, preferably in a biotech/pharmaceutical company or as an automation provider.

Additional Skills/Preferences

Previous experience in the direct supervision of lab automation engineers.

Extensive experience in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and scripting of lab automation equipment including liquid handlers, micro-dispensers, plate washers, plate readers, Octet, etc. is required.

Experience with scheduling, operation, training and troubleshooting of fully integrated robotic systems is a strongly desired.

Expertise with BioSero’s Green Button Go scheduling software is beneficial.

Programming experience using Python, Java, C# or VB.NET, SQL is strongly preferred.

Exemplary interpersonal skills including the ability to work productively with lab research scientists from diverse disciplines.

Excellent organizational skills, as exemplified by an aptitude for clear record-keeping, and data analysis, as well as the ability to prioritize work across multiple projects.

Proven ability to work independently and having strong written and verbal communication skills is required.
