Advocacy & Litigation Attorney

All members of AARP’s OGC advise business units and affiliated entities to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, solution-oriented and timely; consult and collaborate with management to develop strategic plans and ensure organizational activities meet legal and regulatory compliance; and work collaboratively to accomplish organization goals and execute on organization mission. We are seeking an Advocacy & Litigation Attorney to provide legal counsel and representation for internal clients in civil litigation and various legal proceedings. Responsibilities include advising clients on lobbying compliance requirements, campaign finance regulations, and government ethics. Further responsibilities include assistance with internal investigations, internal and external policy compliance, and litigation support. The attorney also supports general enterprise initiatives, and offers support and guidance to clients and stakeholders. Responsibilities Provides timely and accurate information, legal advice, referral, self-help materials, guidance, and/or other assistance to eligible clients within and related to the attorney’s practice area. Develop and utilize expertise in advocacy compliance requirements, in order to drive the organization’s advocacy initiatives. Develops and conducts internal investigations related to litigation and non-litigation matters. Works with internal stakeholders to monitor compliance with internal and external policy requirements. Develops and maintains expertise in primary areas of responsibility. Assists colleagues in providing general litigation support, with an eye towards streamlining and efficiency. Collaborates with other attorneys, clients, and external stakeholders to drive AARP initiatives. Participates as a member of practice area teams and on cross-organizational working groups to develop innovative approaches to enhance service delivery for organization clients. Qualifications JD with a minimum of 1 year of experience in legal research or litigation support. Knowledge and/or experience interpreting complex statutes and providing practical advice to non-attorney stakeholders and clients. Experience crafting responses to subpoenas and conducting document reviews. Experience designing and conducting internal investigations, including demonstrated experience interviewing witnesses and generating investigation reports. Strong interpersonal and legal writing proficiency. Comfort adapting to fast-moving work environments and a willingness to embrace new technologies. Admitted to practice, active member, in good standing in a state Bar, with the ability to practice as an in-house attorney in the District of Columbia.
