Job Description
We're looking for a passionate engineer experienced in aerodynamics or fluid mechanics. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in aerodynamics or fluid mechanics with research or job experience in those subjects. You will thrive in this role if you enjoy close collaboration with design teams, communicating results and engineering concepts to broader teams, and working on open-ended research projects.
As a Aerodynamics Engineer, you will take ownership of engineering projects spanning fundamental fluid mechanics research, aerodynamic optimization, cutting-edge CFD techniques, wind tunnel testing, real-world aerodynamic track and road testing, and aerodynamic model and code development. You will be part of the aerodynamic groups strategy, help guide its R&D projects, methods, and testing continuous improvements, and will be involved in technical mentorship throughout engineering.
You will work in a cross-functional environment, collaborating with product development teams (bike frames, components, accessories, etc) and other Trek Performance Research engineers to develop best-in-class bicycle products. Additionally, you will be involved in external-facing technical materials for marketing and media to support the introduction and launch of new products to our customers.
Flexible start date in fall/winter of 2024. Candidates with the ability to work in the Waterloo, WI headquarters at least one to two days per week are preferred.
Responsibilities:
Develop CFD models (aerodynamic, stability, & thermal) for a variety of products
Plan and lead wind tunnel tests, velodrome tests, and on-road tests
Collaborate with Trek’s professional racing teams to improve aerodynamic performance
Carry out multi-disciplinary design optimizations
Conduct fluid mechanics research – from unsteady bluff body drag reduction to flow visualization techniques
Make engineering design recommendations based upon past CFD and wind tunnel results
Create aerodynamic and environmental models and simulations
Travel <10%
Position Qualifications:
B.S. in one of the following or related field:
Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics
5-10 years of industry experience or an advanced degree and 3-7 years of applicable industry experience
Experience studying, researching, or working with CFD codes, wind tunnel testing, and aerodynamic design
Must be a proactive, independent worker that requires minimal oversight
Must be able to work well in a diverse design group
Able to communicate and present technical ideas to a non-technical audience
Curious always learning mindset
Live or be willing to relocate to the Waterloo, WI area
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree in one of the following or related field:
Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics
Background in Linux and HPC computing
Experience in STAR-CCM+
Experience in multi-disciplinary optimization
Experience in vehicle simulation and dynamics
Experience in external unsteady flows
Experience in thermal analysis or acoustics
Proficiency in programming languages (MATLAB, Java, C++)
