Provides professional nursing care to patients of all ages from infant to elderly during after-hours urgent/emergency clinic. Performs professional nursing duties utilizing the nursing process and initiating nursing actions, providing comprehensive nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs of the patient and family. Ability to work independently prioritizing tasks and completing them in an efficient manner. Able to work closely with providers to provide evidenced based care. Must be comfortable working with little oversite or support from other departments.Key Essentials Functions and Accountabilities of the Job
In conjunction with the primary care provider, develops a plan of care from assessment data for individual patients.
Observes, assesses, recognizes, identifies, and interprets the patient's condition.
Documents observations, nursing interventions, health teaching, therapeutic measures, and the coordinated activities between nursing and other professional disciplines.
Evaluates to what extent nursing interventions have met the health care goals of the patient and revises the plan of care accordingly.
Administers therapeutic measures as ordered by a physician or other qualified health care provider appropriately within scope of practice and department protocol.
Performs triage of patients requesting other than routine clinic appointments.
Assesses patient according to established protocol and provides appropriate advice or directs patient to level of care.
Recognizes signs and symptoms requiring intervention and acts appropriately.
Maintains a safe and aseptic environment by carrying out sterile and aseptic techniques and procedures.
Maintains equipment and adequate level of medical and nursing supplies.
Identifies safety concerns and quickly takes steps to correct the situation.
Nursing staff is responsible for the on-call coverage of the moderate complexity lab which includes but is not limited to:
phlebotomy, QA/QI of instrumentation, testing of lab specimens, documenting of lab specimens, and proficiency testing.
Nursing staff is responsible for respiratory therapy functions such as:
spirometry testing, peak flow, 12 lead EKG, Nebulizer treatments, and oxygen therapy.
Radiology is another function of the nursing staff which includes:
registering x-rays, taking of films, completing and editing films, routing x-rays to other facilities for continuity of care, and performing x-ray equipment maintenance.
Other Functions
Annual competencies in management of Obstetrical Emergencies are required.
Other duties as assigned.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
Successful completion of a BSN or Associated Nursing Degree Program – required
Active nursing license in Alaska or other U.S. state required.
Direct Hire must have applied for an Alaska nursing license at time of hire.
Agency staff must have an active Alaska license.
Must be current with BLS and obtain ACLS, PALS, and NRP within one year of employment – training to be provided onsite
Must obtain TNCC certification within two years of hire – site provided
Complete Healthcare Provider Diagnostic X-Ray Imaging Course – site provided.
High school diploma or GED
Experience Required
Six months of ambulatory health nursing experience with one year of general nursing experience as an RN following completion of a BSN OR
Two or more years of generalized nursing experience
Background in Emergency/Critical Care Nursing – preferred
Annual competence assessment in conscious sedation required.
Knowledge of
Nursing care principles, practice and procedures required to assess and care for patients of all ages and conditions.
Professional nursing care principles, practice, and procedures.
Pharmaceuticals, their desired effect, side effects and the complications of their use.
A wide variety of medical and psychosocial disorders.
Skills in
Correct utilization of computer-based health information system.
Professional nursing skills.
Operating and monitoring a variety of specialized medical equipment and assisting with procedures.
Interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to
Provide guidance and leadership to other nursing personnel.
Develop or coordinate a multi-disciplinary outpatient care plan.
Recognize adverse signs and react appropriately.
Travel Required
Less than 10% travel expected.
