Sky News Australia is looking for an experienced journalist to lead editorial coverage on SkyNews.com.au in the evenings.
The Afternoon Editor will have an in-depth understanding of Australia’s political and media landscape, and the ability to train and lead large numbers of journalists.
A major part of Sky News Australia’s editorial strength is our Prime Time evening coverage and the Afternoon Editor will need to deploy resources effectively to ensure we prioritise the content our audiences want to see. This means the Afternoon Editor will need to work collaboratively with video journalists in the Digital team and make sure we have a coordinated editorial strategy at nights.
Reporting to the Digital Editor, the Afternoon Editor will share responsibility for managing the team of Digital Reporters alongside the Deputy Editor. This will involve exceptional editorial planning, roster management and people management skills.
This position will normally start at 2pm every week day but the Afternoon Editor should expect start times and finish times to fluctuate with editorial needs each day.
Key Responsibilities:
Possess mature and seasoned news judgement to help navigate story pitches from the staff and prioritise the most important issues
Help manage a 7-day roster to ensure the biggest news moments are appropriately staffed
Edit and curate the SkyNews.com.au homepage with the best performing content
Use WordPress CMS to build stories, assign them to appropriate sections and liaise with social media teams
Identify newsworthy opinion and interview content from our television channels and ensure this is delivered to our online audience quickly and accurately into the news cycle
Understand what content works for which platforms and target content specifically for Digital platforms
Work in a fast-paced team environment which involves liaising with the Digital Video teams, and on-air teams to turn around exclusive content quickly
Who are you?Impeccable sub-editing skills and a proven track-record of breaking news stories
Excellent news sense and the ability to write sharp content quickly
Ability to train staff to ensure tight deadlines are being met while maintaining the accuracy of editorial content
Experience in a busy newsroom is ideal and management experience is preferred
Ability to navigate complicated political discussions
A positive attitude with enthusiasm for sharing ideas and learning new skills
Ability to work unsupervised, to tight deadlines and under pressure
Excellent time management and organisational skills
