Afterschool Youth Program Volunteer

Scope of Work:

The Afternoon Youth Program Volunteer will be a supporting role in an afterschool program designed to support newly arrived youth in South Brooklyn. The program is designed for children in 2nd – 5th grades, and is aimed at supporting the specific needs of recently arrived refugee youth who may benefit from additional academic and social resources. The program will consist of a wide range of activities, from STEM, to visual arts and theater. The program volunteer will support the program lead in the classroom, assisting with activity setup, student engagement, and maintaining a positive learning environment. The volunteer may also be providing curriculum and logistical support to the program lead.

 

This is a part-time in-person position, requiring the volunteer to commute to South Brooklyn.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Support the Youth Partnerships and Academy Coordinator and Specialist in facilitating its South Brooklyn Afterschool Youth Program.

Taking attendanceSupporting in lesson and activity facilitationLanguage interpretationSupporting classroom managementCommunicating with students and parentsother related duties as assigned.

 

Learning Objectives:

Volunteer will learn how to plan for and facilitate an educational program for youth.

Volunteer will learn how to plan for and facilitate an educational program for youth.

Volunteer will learn about the IRC mission and values and gain knowledge in trauma informed, culturally-responsive and linguistically inclusive teaching practices.

  Volunteer will learn how to about monitoring and evaluation for complex educational programs for youth.

Volunteer will learn about inter- and intra-departmental coordination processes across the IRC.

 Volunteer will develop skills in language interpretation.

 

Requirements

Clear IRC background check by deadline in order to work with minors and/or vulnerable populations.Current high school student age 17+ or recent high school graduate. Fluency in Ukrainian/Russian highly preferred.Demonstrated experience working with refugee or immigrant students and families, excellent rapport with youth and adults of diverse backgroundsStrong interpersonal skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English requiredStrong desire to learn
