This position (#50411276) is located in the Office of Agricultural & Environmental Services-Agricultural Chemistry in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in East Baton Rouge Parish.
Applicants that possess experience greater than the minimum qualification may be considered for salary higher than the minimum hiring rate utilizing La. Civil Service Rule 6.5g.
This position may be filled by probational appointment or promotion of a classified Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry employee serving with permanent status. Applicants who are not permanent employees of Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry will be required to serve a 24-month probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of general laboratory or laboratory research and analysis experience; OR
Six years of full-time work experience in any field; OR
A bachelor’s degree.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
SUBSTITUTION FOR SEED LABORATORY ONLY:
The possession of a certification in seed germination/purity by the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) or Society of Commercial Seed Technologists (SCST) will substitute for the required college training.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Agricultural Laboratory Scientist 2 by the absence of experienced-level scientific testing and analysis.
Examples of Work
Incumbent of this position will perform chemical laboratory work for the Office of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Chemistry Division within the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry. Supervision for the position is received from the Agricultural Environmental Specialist Administrative Coordinator.

Incumbent will be responsible for independently performing basic and complex chemical laboratory work which involves the
qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of various samples including feed, fertilizer, water, soil, plant, and animal tissues for a variety of analyses with a focus on pesticides. Samples for analysis are submitted by field personnel on a statewide basis.
Incumbent performs work in accordance with modern analytical chemical laboratory methods and procedures, such as those
approved by AOAC, FDA, USDA, and EPA as well as SOPs used by the laboratory. Incumbent will also utilize established professional journals to research analytical methodologies and routines for chemical analyses.
Sample analysis involves all steps of the analytical method from preparation of the sample for analysis through the final results calculations. Analyses involve many diverse techniques from basic bench chemistry through the use of sophisticated instrumentation such as mass spectroscopy.

Proper use of standards and calibration techniques as well as following established quality assurance procedures is required. This includes proper record maintenance of both electronic and written documentation of the sample and its analysis. Other responsibilities include the preventative and routine maintenance of analytical equipment, preparation of solutions and reagents and routine laboratory housekeeping.

+ Prolonged sitting or standing at workstations
+ Light to moderate lifting, 20 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds
Environmental Requirements:
+ Daily use of hazardous chemicals
+ Required to wear appropriate chemical safety equipment (personal protective equipment)
+ Occasionally required to wear face mask
+ Use of sealed source radioactive detectors in analytical procedures
