Air Transportation Specialist Apprentice
**Job Title:** Air Transportation Specialist Apprentice **Skill Code:** UW **Amentum Job Code:** TRP-CGO10:OT-N **FLSA Status:** Exempt **Assigned Work Site:** McMurdo Station, Antarctica **Reports to:** Air Transportation Specialist II **Department:** Antarctic Terminal Operations (ATO) **Employment Type:** Seasonal Contract **Summary:** Completes on-the-job training to develop skills and knowledge to perform Air Transportation Specialist functions. This is a hands-on position that requires operation of heavy machinery, material handling equipment, and frequent handling of boxes and cargo weighing up to 80 lbs. Successful hires will also exhibit strong attention to detail and the ability to labor outside in inclement weather for extended periods of time. **Position Responsibilities:** + Conduct and document daily maintenance checks on automated and manual material handling equipment, including pallet jacks, forklifts, Delta III transport vehicles, passenger vans, and pick-up trucks. + Operate material handling equipment for cargo loading and unloading operations, including wheeled forklifts with 4,000-15,000 lb. capacities and cargo sleds. + Follow safety and security precautions for handling and storing hazardous materials, special cargo, mail, and passenger baggage. + Palletize cargo for shipment via cargo aircraft, ensuring cargo is secured with appropriate devices and equipment per current USAF regulations. + Ensure proper handling and loading of hazardous cargo in compliance with military and/or commercial transportation regulations. + Transport cargo to and from airfields and storage areas in adverse weather conditions. + Load and unload cargo and passenger aircraft according to established procedures. + Verify arriving cargo against manifests and document overage, shortage, or damage. + Receive, identify, and distribute cargo to end users efficiently without compromising the condition of cargo. + Conduct quality assurance checks throughout the cargo movement and pallet-building process, immediately reporting any damage to cargo and equipment to a supervisor. + Maintain and perform required preventative maintenance and inventory of tie-down equipment, including 463L Air Force pallets, cargo straps and nets, chains, and tensioners. + Identify, label, and prepare damaged aircraft pallets and tie-down equipment for shipment to CONUS or Christchurch, New Zealand. + Maintain a safe workplace, ensuring safety is the highest priority. + Attend daily/weekly safety meetings. + Perform other duties as required. **Required Education, Experience, Certificates, and Licenses:** + High School diploma or GED. + 0-6 months of warehouse or cargo/freight operations experience, including the use of forklifts, hand trucks, or other powered and non-powered lifting devices. **Expected Skills and Competencies:** + Ability to work effectively in a team environment under extreme weather conditions. **Preferred Qualifications:** + Knowledge of passenger and cargo movement functions, including loading/unloading aircraft, operating material handling equipment, processing and scheduling passenger and cargo movements, and cargo securing techniques. **Physical and/or Other Requirements:** + Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods. + Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica. + Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer. + Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF. + Willingness and ability to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position. + Ability to perform physical activities, including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold and inclement weather as required by the position. + Participation in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (clean-up), recycling efforts, and safety objectives. + Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States. _Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location._ **Boots Required:** Yes _Amentum is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
