This position is responsible for carrying out new materials development, product development, and characterization tasks. Tasks include, but are not limited to, powder batching and mixing, additive manufacturing machine programming and operation, design of experiments (DoE), machine maintenance, de-powdering, thermal processing of components (binder burn out, infiltration), grit blasting, dimensional and property measurement, following standard operating procedures (SOPs), packing, and shipping. Also, responsible for process and product improvements, complying with quality systems, generating/updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions, recommending & implementing improvements to new and existing programs, documentation, fixturing and processes. Maintain a safe, organized and clean work environment. Communicate effectively to optimize Quality, Safety and Productivity.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Develop equivalent and new materials using additive/conventional manufacturing Activities include hands-on experimentation, materials processing, advanced equipment operation, record keeping, and following of standard operating procedures (SOPs) Conduct technical activities, including powder processing, programming and operating additive manufacturing equipment, programming and operation of thermal processing equipment (ovens, kilns, furnaces), and operation of characterization equipment (sample polishers, microscopes, density stations, ultrasonic tools, hardness testers, etc.). Documentation of experiments and results using travelers, spread sheets, lab notebooks, reports, presentations, and other. Interface with outside entities, including raw materials vendors, tooling houses, and test labs Works on manufacturing of prototypes using additive manufacturing to develop new products Activities include tooling concept development, process scale-up and optimization, hands-on processing, product testing, record keeping, following of SOPs, and documentation  Perform all other duties, as assigned Work with Quality and Manufacturing groups to transition successful prototype products into production Adherence to II-VI policies, ISO procedures, MSDS guidelines, and safety practices Relevant Company Technology Control Plan, Export Compliance requirements, IP, IT, and Quality procedures are understood and executed A high standard of ethics, professionalism, competency, and quality is established and maintained Responsible for maintaining proper housekeeping standards Adapts readily to changes in work caused by new requirements and/or situations Participation in the performance review process Support special projects as required Report on projects and make recommendations to upper Management

 

Education & Experience

BS or MS in a materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines 1 to 2 years hand on experience Experience with additive manufacturing (e.g. binder jetting, laser powder bed fusion, SLA) is highly desirable Hands-on experience with laboratory and processing equipment operation, programming, equipment maintenance, CNC machining, building, troubleshooting, etc.  Experience with precision measurement methods and systems is desirable Experience with networked PC based computer system (spreadsheets, Email, MRP systems) Experience with use of various measuring tools Experience with process improvement initiatives

Skills

Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/blueprints and process procedures is required Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and procedures closely while offering suggestions for continuous improvement Knowledge of design of experiments (e.g. minitab), Matlab, solid modeling (e.g. ProE), additive manufacturing software is desired Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Demonstrated ability to achieve results independently or working with others Writing technical reports and presentations Understanding of MSDS documentation, and ability to use new materials and chemicals in a safe manner. Ability to handle multiple projects involving external and internal priorities Ability to excel in a cross-organizational, cross cultural, global team environment Handle special assignments promptly and professionally Set a high standard of ethics, professionalism, leadership, and competency Hands-on individual with keen interest in position with varied tasks Clean and organized; high attention to detail Able to get along well with others

Working Conditions

Work onsite at the Temecula, CA facility.  

Physical Requirements

Able to frequently lift/push/pull objects that are 25 pounds, or lighter, repeatedly Able to sit, stand, bend, squat and walk about the facility Walking/standing a minimum of eight (8) hours per day
