Technicians will be responsible for deploying Autonomous Recording Units, conducting bird surveys using playback devices, measuring forest stand characteristics, and analyzing acoustic data. Two positions are expected to run from approximately March 1 through August 31, 2025, and one from March 1 to May 31, 2025. Human Resource Contact: Alice Saldana / alice.saldana2@gmail.com ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level. + Work independently to navigate to survey sites in high-elevation conifer forests using maps and GPS, collect detailed and accurate data, and follow safety protocols. + Hike long distances off-trail in challenging conditions with steep and rugged terrain and potentially hazardous wildlife. + Winter and early spring conditions will require over-snow travel; applicants should expect to use skis or snowshoes and drive snowmobiles or tracked vehicles. + Program, deploy, and maintain autonomous recording units (ARUs). + Conduct callback surveys. + Identify western plant species and collect habitat data. + Enter and proof data. Qualifications PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Preference may be given to those with a high school degree and 2 years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development; or 2 years of college coursework towards a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management or another closely related field. **Must have a valid driver’s license. KNOWLEDGE: . + Experience working in adverse field conditions (e.g., deep snow, cold temperatures); ability to hike for extended periods with field gear (~50 lbs.) is preferred. + Experience conducting avian surveys using a playback device, and the ability to identify American Goshawk and other western forest bird species by sight and sound is preferred. + Experience processing avian acoustic data with software tools is preferred. + Experience in programming, deploying, and maintaining Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) is preferred. + Experience collecting habitat data in western coniferous forests is preferred. + Must be able to use maps and hand-held GPS for navigation. + Must be reliable, communicative, and able to work independently and safely in remote locations and challenging conditions. + Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4WD vehicle. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None - See "Preferences" Necessary Special Requirements PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: + Technicians will be required to work independently or in a team of two. + Must be able and willing to hike long distances and collect accurate data while working in challenging conditions including snowy terrain and freezing temperatures. + The work schedule will be variable and subject to change on short notice; this includes working long hours, early mornings, or occasional weekends, as needed. + This position will involve a considerable amount of driving to and from field sites. + This position may require primitive tent camping, generally without phone service, running water, or electricity. Some field housing may be provided during work periods.
