SummaryThe Rail Superintendent is responsible for overseeing railroad track construction projects, including managing the bid and proposal process, and providing leadership to crew members.II. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvide hands-on direction and implementation for track construction, rail yard work, and additional assigned projects.Determine required materials and staffing for each project.Follow company operating procedures and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards to complete work efficiently and safely, maximizing asset utilization and controlling costs.Supervise Foremen and crews to ensure work is completed on time and according to safety protocols.Conduct job site inspections, including checking equipment and tools for safety and functionality.Perform other duties as assigned.III. QualificationsThe qualifications listed below represent the requirements to perform the essential duties of this position. To succeed in this role, the individual must be able to meet all duties satisfactorily. A valid driver’s license is required.Education and Experience:High school diploma or GED required.5–7 years of experience in railroad track construction.2+ years of supervisory or management experience preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Comprehensive knowledge of track structure, construction, maintenance, and defect identification.Skilled in operating and training others on backhoes and front-end loaders.Strong attention to detail with the ability to spot errors or inefficiencies.Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and non-verbal communication.Ability to work well within a team and foster positive relationships.Capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision.Language Skills:Ability to read, comprehend, and follow simple instructions, correspondence, and memos.Ability to write clear and concise correspondence.Ability to present information effectively to groups of customers, clients, and employees.Mathematical Skills:Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.Reasoning Ability:Strong problem-solving ability, capable of understanding and executing detailed instructions.Ability to address issues in rail car switching and resolve common problems as they arise.Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:Certification required when working on tracks controlled by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).IV. Physical DemandsRegularly required to sit, talk, and hear.Frequently required to stand, walk, operate control levers, and reach with arms.Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as required.Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects as necessary.Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.V. Work EnvironmentRegular exposure to outdoor weather conditions; may require working nights, weekends, and holidays.Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and occasionally to heights, fumes, airborne particles, or hazardous chemicals.Noise level typically moderate.VI.
