What is the opportunity?
RBC Global Asset Management Inc. (RBC GAM) is the manager of the Phillips, Hager & North (PH&N) investment funds and RBC Funds, with over $700 billion in assets under management. The Vancouver-based PH&N Alternative Investments team manages approximately $12 billion in assets primarily in the $11 billion PH&N High Yield Bond Fund and the $1 billion PH&N Absolute Return Fund (a multi-strategy hedge fund). The team is led by Hanif Mamdani, Head of Alternative Investments at RBC GAM who has been with the firm for 27 years (after spending 10 years in NY in investment banking and proprietary trading at Salomon Brothers and Credit Suisse).
The PH&N Alternatives Group is well known for its solid long term performance over the past 25 years driven by its detailed investment process and strong trading acumen. The team employs an array of strategies including traditional long only credit investments in high yield and investment grade bonds, event driven equity and debt investing, merger arbitrage, convertible arbitrage, pairs trading, capital structure arbitrage and distressed debt investing.
The PH&N Alternatives Group is seeking to augment its strong existing team with an additional fundamental analyst that can work in a fast-paced and dynamic setting.
What will you do?
Fundamental corporate credit research and security analysis across several market sectors
Understanding macroeconomic forces and business cycles
Identifying new investment themes and specific trade ideas
Interacting directly with senior company executives, securities dealers, and syndication teams
Assisting in trade execution, FX / interest rate hedging activities and cash management
What do you need to succeed?
Must Have
Experience in fundamental investment research (ideally both credit and equity)
Strong knowledge of capital markets (ideally in leveraged finance and/or event driven investing)
CFA designation and/or a degree in Finance or Business Economics
A high level of analytical ability with strong computational / financial modelling skills
Strong writing skills as well as being very comfortable with verbal communication
Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter able to work without constant direction
Proven experience working in a fast paced, goal-oriented environment
Strong work ethic, an inclusive team-oriented attitude and a constant desire to learn

The expected base salary for the above position is $100,000 (or more) depending on factors including but not limited to the candidate’s experience, skills, and registration status
This position will be eligible to receive a meaningful discretionary/variable incentive payment.
