Analytical Chemist (Scientist I)

Job Summary

We have an opportunity for an Analytical Chemist in the Polymer Characterization team at our Experimental Station site in Wilmington, Delaware. The Polymer Characterization team is part of Advanced Analytical-Biosciences group in the Health and Biosciences (H&B) business unit of International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF). The position supports the research and development of novel synthetic and natural polysaccharides, and other biomaterials.

This role provides analytical support for the R&D team as they develop new polysaccharides. We are looking for a polymer analytical scientist who will assist in the characterization of new macromolecules and develop new polymer characterization approaches for designed enzymatic biomaterials (DEB). Laboratory work will include using HPLC, GPC, light scattering, dilute solution viscometry, spectrometry, and related techniques as well as assessing process-structure-property correlations for DEB and other polysaccharide-based materials. In this role, close cooperation within the various DEB R&D project teams, the Advanced Analytical-Biosciences team and across other R&D and business groups is essential. Note that this position is laboratory based (up to 90% time).

Responsibilities

Prepare and analyze polymer samples submitted by project team members using HPLC, GPC, and related techniques available in Polymer Characterization lab. Interpret and report the data in terms of suggested molecular/supramolecular structure of polymers and its effect on polymer properties. Develop new analytical methods to measure structural properties of polymers. Consult DEB project team members on characterization aspects of product development. Lead lab management, including lab safety, chemical inventory, and instrument maintenance. Support other team members in troubleshooting and configuring the analytical instrumentation.

Job Requirements

BS and/or MS degree in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, or a related field

Industrial experience in polymer analysis and characterization, is desired.

Experience in multidetector gel permeation chromatography (GPC), light scattering and other polymer characterization techniques development preferred.

Experience with HPLC, particularly Waters instruments and software, is highly desired.

General knowledge of physics and biochemistry of synthetic and natural polymers.
