ALCC National Park Service Communications Individual Placement (IP) Overview: The Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS) provides scientific, technical, and administrative support to national parks for the management of natural resources. NRSS develops, utilizes, and distributes the tools of natural and social science to help the National Park Service (NPS) fulfill its core mission: the protection of park resources and values. NRSS Office of Communications develops and delivers information about science and natural resources so the public understands, values, and supports science and stewardship in national parks. The National Park Service Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS) and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site (NPS) seek an Individual Placement intern to write content for NPS.gov that integrates indigenous knowledge and western scientific knowledge about park resources. The intern's interest in natural resources and writing will benefit the NPS by presenting content about park resources through the lens of their experience and culture. This position will provide the intern with opportunities to deepen their knowledge of plants, and animals, and develop skills in writing and web publishing. **The IP will be able to work remotely, and will have the chance to travel to NRSS Office in Fort Collins Colorado. Essential functions and responsibilities: This ALCC NPS Communications IP will work to complete tasks and projects outlined below. 1) NPS/NRSS Topic Selection + Resources for topic selection: Species Lists (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), What We Monitor (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), personal contacts or knowledge. 2) NPS/NRSS Topic Research + Learn about indigenous knowledge through reading, and interviews with indigenous scientists and community members. + Learn about resource monitoring practices through reading, interviews with NPS resource managers, and (observations of) field work. 3) NPS/NRSS Article development + Write a draft of the article. Estimated length 300-500 words and select appropriate visuals. + Respond to edits provided by project mentors. + Publish the article on NPS.gov. Required SkillsRequired Experience Enrolled in a two or four year degree program. Enrolled in a natural resources, communication, or related degree program. Knowledge of traditional ecological knowledge and practices. **Applicants must be within the ages of 18-30 due to AmeriCorps age restrictions.**
