Position Purpose
This position provides technical support to anesthesiologists and surgical/procedural staff under the supervision of the department Supervisor/Manager.
Nature and Scope
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based upon physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served. The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and families.
This position provides technical skills as a member of the surgical/procedural team, communicating with supervisors, other surgical/procedural staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.
This position maintains a smooth flow of anesthetic cases, in a timely manner, by assisting the anesthesiologist before, during, and after induction. Has a working knowledge of anesthetic drugs and agents. Is able to pre-test the anesthesia machines and reports deficiency to appropriate manufacturer representative. Recognizes the need for, and adheres to, guidelines for drugs covered by Harris Narcotic Act. Upon request, is able to prepare appropriate equipment necessary for arterial lines, Swan-Ganz, and central line insertion. Assists physicians as required and under direct supervision on the placement of monitoring equipment and position patients in preparation for induction and procedure. The incumbent will perform routine cleaning, sterilization, disinfection of anesthesia equipment. Will assist in restocking, ordering and maintaining supplies. This position will also assist regularly in room turnovers to include cleanliness of operating/procedure rooms, cleaning anesthesia machines, cleaning surgical/procedural equipment, and assisting in removal of unnecessary equipment.
This incumbent works with the department supervisor to determine quantity of items stored and ordered on a daily basis. Knowledgeable in all methods of sterilization and implements these appropriately.
This position has the freedom to rotate work areas and duties; to decide which equipment is needed for assembled cases; to order supplies from Central Supply and Storeroom as needed. Regularly take initiative to clean and appropriately restock anesthesia supplies in OR/procedural rooms and sub-sterile areas. All other decisions must be referred to the appropriate supervisor.
This position does provide patient care.

Education:
Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Completion of coursework in medical terminology preferred.
Experience:
One year as a Respiratory Aide or experience in a perioperative setting preferred.

Certification(s):
Current BLS certification by American Heart Association (AHA) standards requried.
Computer / Typing:
Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
