SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.  The applicant pool resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH.  Under general supervision, administers various types of anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during operations, deliveries and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures; observes anesthetized patients for adverse reactions and takes remedial action; maintains records of anesthesia administered and condition of patient prior to and throughout anesthesia. The essential duties include, but are not limited to the following. + Administers various types of anesthetics by inhalation, intravenous injection, epidural, spinal and block methods; + Checks anesthesia machines to assure proper working order; checks resuscitation equipment; + Orders, assembles and sterilizes all special equipment used in connection with administration of anesthetics for special types of surgery; orders all drugs used in anesthesia procedures; checks all narcotics used in surgery by surgical staff; + Directs the preparation of all spinal and epidural sets for sterilization; + When patient arrives in surgery: checks patient; evaluates pre-operative condition; makes entries in anesthesia record; administers various drugs with oxygen, as necessary for each particular operation; gives blood transfusion to replace loss due to operating procedures; checks blood pressure, pulse and respiration frequency; discontinues anesthesia at conclusion of operation; and + Accompanies patient to recovery room and reports condition to recovery room nurse. The Anesthetist may perform other duties as assigned/required. License and Certification: + Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License; AND + Valid Certification as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.  One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).
