APP Supervisor - Medicine, Medical Oncology -  Full Time

The Supervisor, Advanced Practice Providers supervises advanced practice providers (APPs) (i.e., Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants etc.). Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, onboarding and mentorship of new staff, development, review, and implementation of unit specific competencies, and annual evaluations. This role also works directly with staff, administration, medical directors, and other relevant stakeholders to assure appropriate utilization of all APPs. The Supervisor, Advanced Practice Providers provides advocacy to all APPs and integrates current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care and technological advances into scope of practice. This position participates in the collection of research data and quality improvement of patient care within the acute and outpatient care areas.

Outpatient Oncology Clinics and/or Hospital-based Centers

1. May travel to main campus and satellites to provide care to patients that are new to the system and or require follow-up care. This includes but not limited to same/next day appointments, survivorship visits, and walk-in patients with medical issues.

2. Collaborate with physicians, staff, and leaders in the care of these outpatients.

3. Provides patient/family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, treatment outcomes, possible complications, medications, discharge planning and lifestyle modification.

4. Assure appropriate transfer of patient/communication/documentation regarding the patient’s physician and team.

5. Participate in departmental meetings and other pertinent meetings related.

6. Collects data for patient and program evaluation and participates in quality assessment and improvement activities.

7. Participate in unit QI/Research projects.

8. Provides coverage to areas of need within main campus and the satellites.

9. Cross covers chemotherapy treatment unit as needed

CTU (Chemotherapy Treatment Unit) 20%

1. Provide chemotherapy treatment unit (CTU) coverage to main and satellite. This includes on-call and cross coverage.

2. Provides new and ongoing teaching to oncology patients.

3. Able to collaborate with physicians and other providers regarding the care of a patient receiving treatment in the CTU and in all setting including Inpatient.

4. Assures appropriate medical documentation.

5. Respond to emergencies or rapid responses.

6. Assures patient is transferred to appropriate physician/specialty/hospital for continuation of care.

7. Collaborate with pharmacy and nursing staff to optimize quality of care and time of the patients treated at CTU.

8. Refer to support services when needed.

9. Precept or mentor nursing staff and nursing students.

10. Assists in the management of family dynamics, coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.

11. Assist when needed optimizing infusion center workflow by providing clinical care to patients (i.e. injections, assuming charge role, etc.)

12. Monthly educational in-services to staff based on relevant infusion center topics.

Leadership/Administrative Role 80%:

1. Serves as a mentor and role model to all APPs, thus facilitating the development from novice to expert.

2. Serves as a liaison and advocate between the APP and hospital leadership, department heads, and collaborating physicians.

3. Assist APP in clinical integration on hire and throughout time of employment. 4. Facilitate monthly team huddles.

5. Identifies APP learning needs and provides learning experiences to meet those needs.

6. Integrates and informs APP on current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care and technological advances into APPs scope of practice. 7. Teaches: lectures in continuing education programs, journal clubs, conferences, and provides APPs opportunities for learning.

8. Participates in and or coordinates community education programs as a representative of the service line.

9. Coordinates assignments of preceptors to advanced practice providers.

10. Provides coordination of APP students with university liaisons.

11. Identifies opportunities and challenges to promote full scope of practice in the advanced practice model.

12. Ensures and coordinates standardization of advanced practice processes between patient care services and collaborative teams.

13. Ensures all actions are in alignment with UMHC/SCCC vision, mission, values, and goals and that APPs understand their role and contribution.

15. Provides coordination of coverage during weekdays and weekends between satellites, hospitals, and outpatient areas.

16. Leads a hospital committee and provides advocacy of APPs as representative of the UHEALTH APP Council.

17. Exemplifies professional ethical practice and holds others accountable to do the same.

18. Inspires a culture of excellence and accountability by setting clear goals, expectations, and benchmarks for performance.

19. Engages and empowers staff by sharing decision-making, delegating, providing choice, and fostering autonomy and adaptability.

20. Leads and supports APP staff during periods of transition; communicates purpose and empowers staff to embrace change.

21. Demonstrates leadership during the implementation and evaluation of new initiatives at the unit, division, and department level.

22. Participates in hiring and facilitates training and orientation.

23. Cultivates a climate of professional growth and development to promote excellence, retain talent and develop future leaders.

24. Initiates and/or participates in unit and/or hospital research activities.

25. Utilizes research finding and nursing theory in clinical practice.

26. Promotes evidence based/knowledge-based nursing practice.

27. Authors or contributes to an article for publication in a professional journal or book.

28. Other duties as assigned.

Department Specific Qualifications Education:

Master’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Valid State of Florida APRN or PA License

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

• Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

• Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

• Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

• Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
