Apprentice Embalmer/Crematory Operator

COMPENSATION

Hourly Minimum - Maximum$30.00 - $35.00

This role is a hybrid position with responsibilities of both a Crematory Operator and Apprentice Embalmer. Prepares remains for interment or cremation under the supervision of a Licensed Embalmer with two years California, licensed embalming experience.  Perform embalming, dressing, casketing, cosmetics, and mortuary related duties.  Operates the retorts to cremate human remains.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING   

Crematory Operator Duties

Maintain accurate record keeping of daily cremations, burial permits, work orders, cremation identification cards/tags for caskets and deceased and crematory release check list forms.Assist with cleaning and maintaining of crematory, maintain crematory machinery, replace machinery parts on cremation units as needed.Maintain inventory levels for urns, keepsakes, jewelry and crematory parts.Prepare accounting reports.Maintain Empty Urn LogPrepare and transports cremated remains.Transfer urns to other FL locations in company vehicle.Direct Funeral Services in or outside the park, graveside services, and witness to placement or cremated remains to the satisfaction of the clients while maintaining the high standards of Forest Lawn.Comply with all safely and legal regulations.Other duties as needed.

Apprentice Embalmer Duties

Disinfect remains through external application of antiseptics and disinfectant fluids.Embalm remains to assure proper disinfectant preservation and appearance. Use all proper embalming instruments and machinery.Dress and apply cosmetics; place remains in casket using electric lift.Meet with families for cosmetic interviews and adjustments when needed.Wrap and prepare un-embalmed remains for cremation or other dispositions.Prepare deceased for transportation as needed.Inspect remains to be suitable for final disposition and TSA regulations.Place remains in visitation room and set up room to comply with the family requests and religious traditions.Conduct first calls.Maintain all necessary paperwork to comply with regulatory laws and Forest Lawn standards to include first calls and identification of remains.Assist with the disinterment of human remains as requested.Stock and clean preparation room and refrigeration unit.Maintain the cleanliness of the mortuary building and restrooms when needed.Maintain casket inventory and jewelry log book.Maintain a safe work environment and abide by all safety standards. Attend all safety and SDS meetings. Wear proper clothing and equipment at all times.Maintain positive relationships with all Forest Lawn employees and foster a teamwork environment.Other duties as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS  

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school within Mortuary Science or Embalming.Current valid California Driver's LicenseMust have minimum 1-year general Mortuary experience,Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision, have excellent customer service skills and be extremely detail oriented.PC LiterateEmployee must be able to work well with other employees and maintain a positive attitude.Schedule 6am – 2:30pm during the week when in crematory, mortuary hours 8:00am – 5:00pm.Available for work every other weekend and holidays.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior crematory experience.

DRUG TESTING POLICY

Prior to beginning employment, all job applicants who receive a job offer will be required to voluntarily submit to a drug screening test conducted by a laboratory designated by Forest Lawn. The drug screening method is a hair collection test that will detect the use of illegal drugs within the past 90 days. A positive drug test may result in the withdrawal of the job offer.
