Highlights of the jobWe are hiring up to two (2) full time, permanent Apprentice Power Line Technicians working with our Electricity Distribution team out of Edmonton, AB. Apprentices will report to the Manager, Work Methods.This position is open open to internal and external applicants. As an Apprentice, you will join a collaborative team and learn how to work on the electric grid in the City of Edmonton. You will learn how to perform skilled and hazardous electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electric distribution lines, transformers, and related equipment. You will be responsible for customer service related field tasks and 24 hour emergency response. As safety is essential to everything we do, successful applicants will need to demonstrate a history of safety awareness and a proven safe work record.What you’d be responsible forErecting and maintaining steel, wood or concrete poles, towers and guy wires.Installing, maintaining and repairing overhead and underground power lines and cables, insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, transformers and other associated equipment.Splicing high and low voltage cables and related wiring to connect power distribution systems. Ability to withstand strenuous physical activity inherent to the work performed, as well as to function effectively outside under a variety of weather conditions and through all seasons. Please note that due to the nature of this position you will be required to wear a ½ mask respirator for extended periods on a daily basis.What’s required to be successfulHigh school diploma, GED or equivalent level of secondary education.Official High School transcripts with pass marks in Alberta (higher academic qualification shall be also considered) for:Mathematics 30-2English 20-2Science 10Valid Class 5 (or higher) Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License, with no more than six (6) demerits, and ability to qualify for an EPCOR Driver's permit.Must be able to acquire a Class 1 Driver’s License within one year. A Driver Abstract may be required at time of the interview.Previous experience in a utility industry would be considered an asset.Ability to use proper lifting techniques required to work with equipment in excess of 25 kilograms or approximately 55 pounds.For internal applicants: Successful APfR, excellent performance and attendance record.Comfortable working at heights, in bucket trucks, climbing power poles, confined spaces and varying weather conditions.Capable of working with energized high and low voltage conductors and equipment.Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical prints and schematics.Demonstrated understanding of distribution equipment used in the electrical utility industry.Clearance on a pre-placement medical, drug and/or alcohol testing, and a pulmonary function test to wear a respirator is a requirement of the position if not previously completed. Proven physical coordination with manual dexterity and mechanical ability.Good hearing and vision.Previous related experience in electric utility operations is considered an asset. Final wage and step will be determined at the time of selection. These rates may change subject to ratification of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.Hours of work: 8 hours per day between the hours of 0700h - 1600h, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. However, in accordance with Article 6.01.01.02 of the Agreement, the work week may be any 5 consecutive days.
