Archaeological Field Director – California and Nevada

We are currently accepting applications for On-Call Archaeological Field Director for Projects in California and Nevada, with opportunities to work on projects other states.

 

These are part time temporary hourly positions and hours may vary depending on project-specific workload. Pay rate will range between $31 to $36 per hours and will be based on individual qualifications, education, experience, and assigned project role. Travel expenses are reimbursed per project (e.g., lodging, meals/incidentals, travel, etc.). Lodging is single occupancy.

 

Selected applicants will conduct various types of archaeological fieldwork such as cultural resource monitoring, field survey, testing, and data recovery under the supervision of Principal Investigators. Staff will be expected to work as a team and assist with mapping cultural resources in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units or tablets, digital photography, and identifying and recording artifacts, features, and resources on appropriate state site forms.

 

Your Role:

·         Lead and coordinate archaeological field projects, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring.

·         Serve as crew lead, overseeing field staff and ensuring project goals are met efficiently and effectively.

·         Coordinate with agency officials, clients, Tribal representatives, and other stakeholders.

·         Manage field and post-field data, ensuring accurate and timely data collection, analysis, and reporting.

·         Write and develop survey plans, technical archaeological reports, and other necessary documentation.

 

Qualifications:

·         Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.

·         Completed an archaeology field school.

·         At least 1-3 years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM).

·         Minimum of 1-2 years as a crew lead, with experience in field project coordination.

·         Experience coordinating with agency officials, clients, Tribal representatives, and managing field and post-field data.

·         Experience writing survey plans and technical archaeological reports.

·         Experience with the California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 forms and Intermountain Antiquities Computer System (IMACS) forms.

·         Experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring.

·         Experience with GPS units (Trimble; Bluetooth with tablets), TerraSync, ArcGIS, and other computer-based programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

·         Strong leadership and team management skills.

·         Strong writing and editing skills.

·         Ability to travel for prolonged field work.

·         Self-motivated, respectful of others, positive, energetic, and able to work and participate in a team environment.

 

Other Requirements:

·         A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required, along with a physical if needed.

·         Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

First Aid/CPR training.

 

Additional Information:

·         Please indicate in your application if you have previously been listed as a crew chief or field director on any federal, state, or local government permits.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

·         Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

·         Performs manual labor including excavation with shovels. 

·         Availability to work extended field rotations from5 to 10 days at a time.

 

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience.

Salary Range: $31.00hr. - $36.00hr.

 

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
