Architect for Human Spaceflight (NASA HHPC)

This position will be within the Leidos Health & Civil Sector, which supports the Human Health and Performance Contract at NASA Johnson Space Center.  This is your opportunity to join the myriad of teams sustaining a human presence in space while working to return humans to the moon and beyond.  Specifically, the incumbent will join the Center for Design and Space Architecture (CDSA) team, which specializes in human-centered design and leverages skill in architecture and industrial design to provide functional, intuitive solutions to human spaceflight problems. The ideal candidate will leverage architectural skill and spaceflight knowledge to create more efficient and user-friendly products for human spaceflight. The incumbent can expect to work on habitat design for micro-, lunar-, or Martian gravity, rover design for the lunar and Martian surface, and full-scale or part-task mockup design to support human-in-the-loop testing of those concepts here on Earth. You will work on site at NASA Johnson Space Center and will routinely collaborate with engineers and scientists to ensure designs meet functional requirements, support the concept of operations, and integrate well with other systems.

Tasks may include:


• Designing the interior layout of a pressurized rover or habitat
• Conducting a trade study to assess different solutions for transferring crew between pressurized environments on the lunar surface
• Designing and building mockups to test spacecraft design
• Developing novel ideas for future spacecraft
• Using virtual reality (VR) to review and evaluate human spacecraft design or to simulate operational scenarios

Essential Duties & Responsibilities​

• Transition ideas into digital models using Rhino 7 and generate renderings and other visual communication products

• Design and prototype concepts at varying fidelities
• Assess an overall architecture (i.e. space station interior, surface base infrastructure) and identify operational challenges and incompatibilities
• Work with subject matter experts to iteratively develop design concepts to meet their needs and requirements
• Create accurate, highly-detailed CAD models that will be used to build parts or mockups
• Build/assemble/install components, equipment, structures that meet safety requirements for human-in-the-loop (HITL) testing
• Individually attend meetings, take notes, ask questions, capture knowledge, and accurately relay information to the team
• Participate in regular team meetings to discuss activity and progress
 

Minimum Requirements:


The candidate must have a degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or similar with a portfolio and prior experience that demonstrates their ability to design buildable products and illustrates their expertise in physical construction and digital design. The candidate must possess excellent design and construction skills across multiple physical and digital mediums; effective interpersonal communication and teamwork; experience and skill in Rhino3D; and excellent attention to detail.  

Preferred Requirements:


Desired skills include excellent organization and planning skills as well as extensive shop experience and skill with a variety of tools, machines, and materials. A candidate with at least 1 year of professional experience that involved designing and building hardware, equipment, prototypes, mockups or similar is preferred. A candidate with knowledge of space vehicles, extreme environment habitation, design evaluation, ergonomics/anthropometrics, systems engineering, and familiarity with human factors principles is also preferred.

Pay Range:Pay Range $55,250.00 - $99,875.00
