An exciting opportunity to lead the Salvation Army Boys & Girls of Metro. Houston is open, and we are looking for our next Area Director to make a positive impact on kids’ lives. What will you do? Direct and manage overall daily operations at clubs with the primary concern for a comprehensive, outcome-driven program and service delivery, supervision and training of staff, facilities management, community relations, and membership administration. Provide programs in accordance with and to advance the mission and goals of the Boys & Girls Clubs and The Salvation Army. Provide leadership, direction and support to the Area Commander/Corps Officer in developing organizational goals, attaining/allocating resources, and establishing policies. Responsibilities

Supervisory Responsibilities (20%)

•Provides leadership to Club staff through the establishment of goals, objectives and procedures; develops administrative and operational standards by which goals will be met. (Leadership)

•Recruits, manages and provides career development opportunities for branch staff and volunteers; conducts regular staff meetings. (Human Resources Development)

•Instruct and trains employees in the proper methods and procedures for conducting work; monitors work in progress and upon completion for compliance with established program policies and procedures; conduct performance evaluations and make salary and hiring/firing recommendations to HR and Area Commander. Strategic Planning and Resource Development Responsibilities (40%)

• Guides, supports and serves the Area Command/Corps Officer on establishing goals and developing policies, procedures, budgets and programs that fulfill and advance the mission of The Salvation Army through the Boys and Girls Club programs.

• Assures management and attainment of resources necessary to ensure the financial operations of the agency are conducted in accordance with applicable laws.

• Assures that the organization is in compliance with membership and other requirements or standards of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, United Way and other affiliated and regulatory agencies.

• Provides professional leadership to the Area Commander / Corps Officer to assure development of an effective and motivated Advisory Council/Committee, including identification, recruitment, training and involvement of members in meeting the goals of the organization.

• Implements strategic planning process resulting in development and implementation of quality strategic plan.

• Identifies and evaluates plan for improvement and implement plan.

• Manages Branch financial resources assisting in the development of annual budgets; controls expenditures against budget. (Financial Acumen)

• Ensures administrative and operational systems are in place to maintain the operation of the physical properties and equipment of the Club, including use of facilities by outside groups.

• Directs and participates in public relations and fundraising activities.

• Promotes The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club services to individuals, other service organizations and the local community.

• Informs local Clubs of Boys and Girls Club funding opportunities, meets with Branch Mangers as needed. Assists Area Commander/Corps Officer with planning of training conferences, assist with annual inspections and program reviews as needed.

• Ensures a healthy and safe environment, ensuring facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained.

• Develops partnerships with parents, community leaders and organizations.

• Ensures the development and implementation of a strategic planning process for overall Branch programs, including the development of annual program objectives. (Innovation)

• Develops and maintains public relations to increase the visibility of programs, services and activities within the Club and Community.

Community Relations (10%)

• Promotes The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs services to individuals, other service organizations and the local community with a focus on collaborative communication. Ensure partnerships with local service organizations to foster resources and market programs that help improve program quality and Club growth.

• Identifies and builds relationships with internal and/or external partners or key stakeholders, such as service groups, community organizations or companies, to support programs or projects.

New Club Growth (20%)

• In conjunction with divisional/territorial headquarters and local leadership/boards, develop plans to expand the opening of new The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club sites or programs within area or region. Helps to create infrastructure to support growth such as Unit Boards where applicable. Helps hire and train local Club staff to implement program services.

BGC Program Management Responsibilities (5%)
▪ Monitors and approves the organization’s program services and assures achievement and advancement of its mission and goals. (Achievement Focus)
▪ Establishes Branch programs, activities and services that prepare youth for success and that create a club environment that facilitates achievement of Youth Development Outcomes
▪ Plans, develops, implements and evaluates Branch overall programs, services and activities to ensure they meet stated objectives and member needs and interests; compiles regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation. (Project Alignment)
Infrastructure Responsibilities (5%)
▪ In conjunction with Area Commander and the appropriate advisory board committee, ensure facilities/ systems are operating properly. This would include developing and managing vendor contracts, creating plans for replacements/repairs and formulating plans for the future.
Other Responsibilities:
▪ May be assigned special projects periodically by the Area Commander/Corps Officer.
▪ Maintains contact with Area Commander/Corps Officer, Advisory Council, Committee, Club staff and volunteers.
▪ Maintains contact with potential and current donors, external community groups and others as required.
▪ Serve in a leadership role in organization’s Safety Committee and serve as a key player in the development of institutional policies, procedures, and practices ensuring that the organization and all unit Clubs are in compliance with local, state and federal safety requirements and the Membership.
▪ Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation program development. Knowledge of the principles and practices of facility management. Knowledge of the principles and practices of volunteer recruitment.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of community relations, development and fundraising. Ability to supervise, lead motivate and influence the staff and patrons of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Ability to develop and implement promotional and fundraising activities to enhance the outreach and financial efforts of the Boys & Girls Clubs. Ability to enforce the Boys & Girls Club rules and to resolve conflicts among patrons visiting the Club in order to ensure the safety of all patrons and staff.

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in business, accounting, or social services

and  Five (5) years’ progressively responsible experience in the management, administration and operation of a Boys & Girls Club, with at track record of at least two years in a leadership capacity of a Club organization with multiple sites with a budget of $1.5 Million up to $3M. or Seven (7) years’ experience working in a similar youth-service organization or any equivalent combination of education/experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certifications: Valid Driver’s License (CDL preferred). Basic First Aid and CPR Certification. Tier 2 BGCA Trainer Certification or ability to obtain.
