Job DescriptionThe mechanic will be responsible for maintaining the serviceability of contingency fleet vehicles and armored vehicles pending shipment to posts worldwide. Additionally, the Automotive Mechanic will perform inspections on selected vehicles and provide reports to the team for necessary action. The personnel in this position will report to SA-7D and support the Armored Vehicle Branch. The knowledge, experience, and efforts of the armored vehicle maintenance mechanics are paramount in providing state of the art armored vehicles that are needed to enable the department to conduct diplomacy in hostile environments. The incumbent develops technical solutions to problems that arise, referring only those of a serious or unusual nature to the Program Manager.
Responsibilities:
Carries out the daily operations of the armored vehicle repair facility, to include traveling worldwide on a temporary basis to repair mechanical systems on armored vehicles, receiving vehicles from manufacturers and armoring companies, developing solutions to commonly occurring problems with DS armored vehicles, suggesting design change based on these solutions, and preparing vehicles for overseas shipment. Provides diagnosis and repair of DS armored vehicles and makes independent assessment of the best course of action based on specifications in technical manuals and accepted industry practices. Develops and troubleshoots comprehensive solutions to issues caused by harsh environmental conditions and/or weight associated with armored systems installation. Performs major and minor automotive repairs to OEM systems as well as armor-specific remediation such as partial disassembly and assembly of armored vehicles to include cutting and fitting transparent and opaque armor materials, welding and fastening armor components and removal/install of run-flat devices in the tires of armored vehicles. Prepares detailed repair reports on actions conducted on domestic and overseas model vehicles and the diagnosis performed to find and complete required repairs. Compares data collected from field inspections in order to recommend an overall assessment of manufacturer’s product. Utilizes maintenance requirement entries in a web enabled application for the tracking of repair and maintenance costs associated with DEAV repairs. When on temporary duty assignments domestically and overseas, acts independently or as lead team member with responsibility for completion of the mission. Prepares detailed repair reports on actions conducted on domestic and overseas model vehicles and the diagnosis performed to find and complete the required repairs.Qualifications/Requirements:
Knowledge of the type and extent of adjustments and alignments that are required to make repairs and maintain the armor components of DS vehicles throughout their useful life. Knowledge of various automotive repair tools, including computerized vehicle manufacturer diagnostic tools, specialty glass tools, and power tools, such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding torches, jacks, and hoists. Knowledge of factory electronic systems found in DS vehicles.Ability to plan, diagnose, and complete a variety of complex repair assignments supporting the armored vehicle repair facility.Ability to test OEM and aftermarket automotive parts and systems to ensure they function correctly.Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing, to conduct briefings, plan repair missions, and prepare reports for management on overseas assignments.Interim Secret clearance or ability to obtain onePossess and maintain Commercial Driver’s license and knowledge of operating a heavy duty recovery vehicle.At a minimum, Incumbent must be certified in at least four of the core eight Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) A1-A8 for basic automotive service.A1 – Engine RepairA2 – Automatic Transmission/TransaxleA3 – Manual Drive Train and AxlesA4 – Suspension and SteeringA5 – BrakesA6 – Electrical/Electronic SystemsA7- Heating and Air ConditioningA8 – Engine Performance#OpportunityOwned
