Art Director

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is seeking to hire a creative leader to fill the role of Art Director. This position is responsible for leading creative execution of HFHI’s visual assets, materials, products and publications, ensuring alignment with the organization’s brand identity and strategic framework. Reporting to the organization’s creative director, the art director manages the graphic design team as they produce high-quality deliverables that advance Habitat’s established brand and visual storytelling guidelines, while representing the work of a wide variety of programs, initiatives and events.

Working closely with the creative director, the art director translates the organization’s brand and creative vision into actionable design strategies as they oversee the day-to-day execution of visual projects. This role involves designing key assets, providing practical guidance on brand and design best practices, collaborating cross-functionally with Global Communications colleagues to address brand and design challenges, and liaising with stakeholders from other divisions and the global network as needed. The art director also contributes to special projects and helps ensure that all materials effectively communicate HFHI’s mission, strategy and brand through compelling and cohesive visual narratives.

This position may be based remotely within the US and requires 10% travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Creative and team leadership (40%)
*Drive creative ideation by leading brainstorming sessions and fostering the creation of innovative visual concepts for deliverables and special projects.
*Ensure that all artwork, graphics, layouts and designs produced by the art department fulfill Habitat’s brand guidelines and best practices.
*Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to team members, ensuring their understanding of Habitat’s brand and strategic framework, while encouraging artistic growth and collaboration.
*Manage multiple design projects and lead the team’s work with internal clients, ensuring timely delivery, adherence to budgets, and proper routing through the Global Communications request and approvals system.
*Establish processes and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of design initiatives and regularly assess outcomes to drive continuous improvement.

Strategic design oversight and collaboration (40%)
*Collaborate cross-functionally with other HFHI teams and stakeholders and with cross-functional Global Communications colleagues as well as external vendors to deliver cohesive, effective and visually compelling materials that support Habitat’s brand.
*Work closely with digital team to ensure designs are proactively optimized for online audiences, so that visuals work across a variety of platforms, considering technical requirements, user experience and accessibility.
*Advise photo/video team as needed on logo use, font selection, design of lower thirds, etc.
*Collaborate with global colleagues to create culturally relevant designs that resonate across diverse regions and demographics while ensuring organizational design consistency, establishing templates and other forms of self-serve collateral when possible.
*Serve as a consultant and collaborator as needed to ensure the success of visual projects and to provide brand and design expertise.

Visual brand stewardship (20%)
*Collaborate with creative director to maintain and advance Habitat’s brand and visual identity, problem-solving and troubleshooting new and existing designs as challenges arise

Requirements

*Associate degree in graphic design, visual communication, fine arts or related subject or equivalent experience.
*10+ years of experience of experience in graphic design and art direction, with at least 6 years of progressive supervisory experience managing creative teams.
*Strong familiarity with brand strategy and internal processes within an agency or global organization.
*Demonstrated expertise in print, multimedia, web, and editorial design and production.
*Proven ability to lead, mentor, develop and manage a team of experienced graphic designers.
*Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and the ability to troubleshoot design software effectively.
*Strong understanding of hardware and software solutions that enhance creativity and productivity.
*Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
*A demonstrated ability to collaborate.

*Experience with video graphics, animation, digital design and emerging multimedia platforms.

The actual salary offered for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including location, internal equity and the candidate’s qualifications and professional experience. HFHI offers a competitive, comprehensive benefits package that varies by country and typically includes vacation leave, sick leave, personal days, health insurance options, retirement plan contributions and life insurance. For work locations in the US, the hiring range for this position is $86,700-$102,000 per year.
